Subject: 2 QUESTIONS - IP: Logged
Message: Howdy guys - it's been awhile since I checked in. I bought a 2004 Nissan Titan last year - still have the 1999 Dodge Dakota.... my son will inherit it soon, when he starts driving.
My ABS/BRAKE/CHECK ENGINE lights all on today - speedo not working. Ran the code - sure enough, it's the speed sensor. I bought one -- this is a manual 5 speed V6. Where the hell is it located? On top of the diff. in the back like the Durango, V8s? I did a search... can't find the location for this on a V6 5 speed.
Second - running great today and wham, it just dies. Like I turned the key off. Pulled off to the side of the road, started it... runs great. About two hours later, on my way to the store -- same thing. Dies. Starts, runs fine.
Yesterday, I installed new plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, air filter, cleaned the throttle body. RUNS GREAT!!! When it's not stalling.
Ideas? Thanks - Jim

Message: I did a further search and discovered the "dying" issue... hopefully the new sensor will clear that up along with the "light show" I have on the dash board.
Still can't find where this sensor is located on the 99 V6 5 speed. Part's made in Taiwan, BTW, from Auto Zone. Hopefully it'll last longer than the Chrysler part at the dealership. Hell, they probably made it for them in the first place. - Jim

Message: Your speed sensor that is not working is located on the top of your rear differential. It should have cost you anywhere from 45-50 bucks. This is very common problem. It will clear that brake/abs light.
On a second note in regards to your truck stalling out...did the problem start to occur when your speed sensor went out? Is the truck only stalling on decelaration?
My 1999 5.2 manual did this when the sensor went out. Basically the pcm is getting a bad speed reading (since the sensor was bad) and cut the engine out.
Replace the rear diff speed sensor then take your truck for a drive. Use your clutch/gears to slow you down...this will likely fix your stalling problem.
By the way, changing the sensor is extremely easy so don't take it to a shop. Just jack the truck up and grab a couple tools. Make sure to squeeze some di-electrode grease on the electrical connection.
