Subject: what should i do at 123,000 miles?
IP: Logged

i have a 93 318 auto cc v8 4x4. runs fine i think. but it just doesnt seem to get the low end grunt i thought it would. it doesnt seem to get the mileage it should either. i dont think many sensors have been changed recently, if ever. i have all the service records, and i dont see any engine work except the crank sensor. what does everyone here think i should do, to get this back up 100% ?

change your plugs, wires and cap with a brass one. clean your TB. some of that may help your low end grunt. check your vacum lines and see if they are cracked or rotted.

New cap/rotor, wires, plugs, t-stat. Check for a blown plenum gasket in the intake. I guarantee you have one if it has never been worked on. Replace the cat and O2 sensor. Cat is probably plugged. PCV and crank breather filter. EGR valve may also need replaced. New hoses, you existing ones are probably brittle and will crack when you try to remove them. Flush the cooling system and add fresh coolant. Check for cracks on top of the radiator. It is plastic and will crack over time. Oil change and filter, ATF change and filter, Drain the differentials and put in fresh lube. Check for bad ball joints and tie rod ends. Bushings as well.

Take off your air filter assembly. With the engine off, open the throttle body blades and look inside with a flashlight. If there is heavy carbon buildup or oil pooling in the bottom of the intake, then it is blown. The plenum gasket is part of the intake manifold, and is a frequent problem on these motors. There is an updated gasket set that helps, you can buy a billet belly pan to swap out with the steel one, or you can use The Right Stuff gasket maker.

Check Autozone. I think Rockauto.com also sells some. You can also check with the dealer.

When you remove the intake manifold, there is a steel plate bolted to the bottom. The gasket goes between the plate and the manifold. When this gasket fails, it allows oil to be sucked up from the lifter valley and into the manifold.

are you looking for real maintenance or do you want to tinker? If you don't have the symptoms of a blown plenum gasket don't touch the manifold.

I gaurantee somebody like you who doesn't know what they are doing will fcuk up their truck.

Man there is some retarded advice on this board.

Is your cat original? Mine was pretty clogged after 175k miles and finally got replaced. If it clogs up it can hurt performance.

i dont think it is. i looked under the truck. there is a protective shield over where the cat would be. it keeps the heat off the body or whatever. well, someone dropped that cat, put a pipe in its place, and put a cat somewhere else farther down the exhaust. weird. im sure the cat is good though.

Do a search here, fcuk wad

" did check down the throttlebody and saw no oil or carbon buildup"

Then your plenum gasket is fine. To do a plenum gasket properly is pretty expensive.

But you sound like the garden variety know-it-all-turd-wit that crops up here from time to time and just has a jones to take something apart and make it "better".

Good luck, moron. You're in over your head and you don't have a clue what you're doing. You're off to a good start and it'll be amusing to see you come back begging for more advice.

i think its you who has no idea what your talking about or what your doing. ive worked on cars and trucks for many years. the only reason i dont know what a plenum gasket is, is cause ive never heard of anything called a plenum gasket on a chevy. im not in over my head. i never have been no matter what i had to work on. so fukk off.
