Subject: 12 volt power only with key on IP: Logged
Message: Is there any way that I can change the wiring of my 12 volt cigarette lighter so that it provides continuous power without having to have the key on? This way I could charge my cell phone while at work.

Message: You could splice the power and ground into the stereo leads. You would need to find the constant power lead that goes into the stereo.
Although, I would not use it as a cigarette lighter after doing that or you run the risk of blowing a fuze.

Message: If you happen to have a cap on the console where an auxilliary 12 volt outlet would be if you had that option, go to the dealer and buy the outlet (should come with lock/trim ring) Now, wire that baby to a constant fused power source under your dash. I did it on my '99 Dak sport and it worked great!

Message: Why not just charge it when your at home?
If you install a constant powered outlet in your truck you run the risk of killing your batter.
But if your sure you want to do this. Then simply find the ground wire on the outlet and cut it off cause the ground is what is broken when you turn your key off. The outlet is allready constantly powered. But the key shuts of the ground opening the circuit preventing flow of power. Cut the ground wire with enough slack to allow you to run it to the ground wire of your stereo.
Everything will be just fine.
And you will have constant power.
Also you will still be able to use it as a cigarette lighter cause it will still be fused on its own circuit.
