 Subject: evaporator: plate fin or serpentine?

I've torn my dashboard out and removed the evaporator core on my 98 CC. Shopping online for a replacement, I see serpentine style for considerably cheaper than the plate/fin type.
My question: Will either type fit into the same box? The original was obviously plate/fin type, but I'd try the serpentine if saved me some $.
On another note, don't buy from autozone online.
I ordered "in stock" evaporator from them, then more than a week later they tell me it's out of stock. This, after claiming the item would ship within 2 business days. Man, that ticked me off!!!
Any help/ comments appreciated!
