Message: Started as the A500, later designated 42RH. In 1996, the automatics received electronic valve bodies, and while they will bolt in, require the OBDII computer that also arrived in 1996, so skip them for the '93. The Rams usually had the heavier A518/46RH tranny, which will bolt in place of the A500/42RH.

Message: OnBoardDiagnostics....second generation. Made mandatory by the feds starting 1996 model year. Much more intricate and involved in the electronics of a vehicle.

Message: Get a '96 or newer "RE" transmission. Sell the '93 tranny to help finance the RE.

Message: You can swap out all the guts. You will need to keep the 00 valve body, and overdrive housing. Basically, everything electronic has to be used. All the hard parts and friction materials (clutches, steels, pinion gears, etc. will swap. There were some changes along the way, and certain individual parts won't swap for size issues. Mopar will deny the parts can be swapped vehemently, but it is perfectly do-able. Just remember that the overdrive housing is one of those parts that's different. The area and passages for the governor support tubes was eliminated. It's pretty easy to see the internal changes once you're in there. It's a good idea to get the ATSG manual. The video is very helpful as well. This site has tons of parts, and it can also serve as a guide for what will swap between trannys by looking at how they are listed.

Message: If you mean to have it rebuilt, it's almost as much as buying a new one. Some manage to get a deal, but commonly, $1500-$1800 is the price I see tossed around.

Message: You can get a re-man for around $1200 including core charge, plus another couple hundred for freight. The companies run these trannys on eBay all the time.
