Subject: Steering wheel stereo control buttons IP: Logged
Message: Having an intermittent problem with the volume up/down on the steering wheel. Every now and then when I press volume down, it will change radio stations if on radio or change tracks if on cd. Pulled switch and did resistance checks - appear normal. Cleaned switch with contact cleaner - still happened. Anyone see this type of problem? I don't want to replace the switch just yet. Maybe it's a stereo issue? 2000 R/T

Message: Since the switches seem not to be shorted it sounds like the outer rocker switch (Volume up/down) is probably dragging, or hanging on the center round button which controls the stations and discs.

Message: DESCRIPTION
The remote radio switches share a common steering
wheel wire harness with the vehicle speed control
switches. The steering wheel wire harness is connected
to the instrument panel wire harness through
the clockspring.
OPERATION
The remote radio switches are resistor multiplexed
units that are hard wired to the high-line Central
Timer Module (CTM) through the clockspring. The
CTM monitors the status of the remote radio
switches and sends the proper switch status messages
on the Programmable Communications Interface
(PCI) data bus network to the radio receiver.
The electronic circuitry within the radio is programmed
to respond to these remote radio switch
status messages by adjusting the radio settings as
requested.

Message: Great info fellas. Justi, My volume up/down rocker is on the right side, track/station select & scan rocker is on the left. I have noticed that if I press vol. down more deliberatley (as opposed to a quick tap) it hasn't happened. I noticed than the resistance reading for up/down are "fixed", but I'm still thinking it's a carbon issue.

Message: Hey FSM, looks like you cut & pasted that from something. What was it and how do I get it? (I'm ordering a manual from Chrylser next week)

Message: For what it's worth Pacman, my 2000 Dak recently started doing exactly the same thing. I hadn't seen any other posts on the subject and figured it was a noisy switch (without any troubleshooting). Thanks for bringing it up.
