Subject: Cust underdrive pulleys, alternator IP: Logged
Message: Okay, apparently the problem is my custom pulleys. I have all custom ASP pulleys and I'm guessing the culprit is the underdrive pulley. Apparently the alternator is not in sync with this setup. Should I look into getting a different type of alternator or should I just scrap this pulley system and go back to stock? Please advise.
For history of the problem, read below:
Message:
My 97 CC 318 won't hold charge while idling. While sitting at stop lights during frequent city driving or while waiting in line at the drive through, my battery loses charge. If left idling long enough it will even stall out and not start back due to low juice. Jumping it off starts it right back up but then it won't charge itself up enough without taking the battery out and charging it myself.
My first thought is alternator or bad battery. However, the battery does not lose charge over night, only while idling. Also, the battery and alternator both TESTED GOOD out of the car at several places on several machines.
The problem can't be with either one.
Interestingly enough, both the battery and the alternator TESTED BAD on several machines while they were still installed IN the car.
Next I thought perhaps the computer is not targeting the correct voltage and so the voltage regulator (which I assume is built in to PCM) is not targeting enough juice. This seemed possible since I had messed with the programming several times with a Hypertech chip. I flashed back to stock at dealership with NO RESULT.
What should I try next? If there is a short, shouldn't it be draining over night????
Maybe I should just get new cables\terminals although they look good?

Message: UD Pulleys will cause that kind of problem. A regular alternator does not make much of a charge at idle. When you underdrive it you end up in your situation. There are some custom wound alts that will put out 100 amps at idle, and over 250 at 1500 rpms or so. If you want to keep your UD pulleys that is about the only choice you have. An alt like that will easily run $250-400.
If it were me I would ditch the UD pulleys. I don't think the benefit is big enough if you run into charging problems. Sell them on ebay or one of the dodge boards. You can probably get around $100 for them.

Message: first, check all connections, positive & ground. you might try an optima deep cycle battery. it would be able to hold up longer while the alt is not charging. if that doesn't work get rid of the alt pulley.
i have an underdrive crank pulley only on my '00 QC and have had no problems at all. my voltage stays right at 14 even @ idle with all acc. cranked wide open(a/c, stereo w/ 300 watt amp, lights & foglights on). and i still have the original battery, almost 6 yrs old.

Message: I installed the ASP pulleys also. I had the exact same problem with the charging. I could also notice my headlights dim considerably while at idle. As soon as I hit the gas they brighten. I put the stock alternator pulley back on and all my problems were solved.

Message: Autozone will not sell the stock size alternator pulley without a new alternator which I don't need. Anyone know where to get just the pulley? Also, how much can I expect to pay for this pulley?

Message: www.car-part.com. I found an alt there for one of my cars. $25 shipped, no core charge for a 120 amp unit out of a Caravan. I imagine you could find a similar deal on one for the truck. Just get the whol alt. If you are lucky you will find one that is rated higher than yours. And it really doesn't matter anyway if it works or not. Just get the cheapest one and pull the pulley off when you get it. Then if you want sell the alt on ebay for what you paid for it.
