Subject: Trans Overheating Help! IP: Logged
Message: I've been reading posts on here for a while was hoping you guys could help me out. I have a 97 auto V6 3.9L and recently the trans has been overheating. Fluid and filter was changed this past weekend. Also cleaned the tb and iac sensor. I'm leaning towards one of the solenoids in the trans but I'm not sure. Here is the sequence of what happens when it overheats.
Usually after driving for about 20 mins, (sooner in city driving) I notice that after I come to a light, I will feel a clunk as I'm stopping. When I take off there is a huge loss in power and then i sometimes feel another clunk and it seems to run fine until I stop again. It does this for a short time and then I stop feeling the clunks and it just has hardly any power at all. Soon after this the overdrive automatically shuts off (cannot be turned back on) and the trans temp light comes on after that.
Like I said i'm suspecting a solenoid in the trans but i'm not sure which one or if thats even the problem. I would appreciate any help with this.
sorry for the long post.

Message: keep an eye on the fluid color. is there enough? im not really sure on how this is going down, but maybe the check valve is screwed up. its in the tranny lines to the radiator. if thats f'ed up, you wont get good fluid flow and it will overheat the tranny. how does your radiator look. if you dont have an external cooler, and your radiator is corroded to hell, you can overheat the tranny that way too. go from there and see what happens. solenoids will make your tranny f'ck up, not really overheat i dont think.

Message: thanks for the input, i'll check the fluid again. I'm thinking solenoids because something is screwed up with the trans which is causing it to overheat. the radiator was replaced about 2 yrs ago and looks to be pretty good. thanks again.

Message: my truck was just having the same prob yesterday..what we did was flush out the radiator and all that, then we found that the fan had blown a fuse and thats why it was overheating when i would be stopped at a redlight. so we got a new fuse for the fan. just make sure u check that and clean out everything
