Message: got my first dakota. a '97 with only 51,000 miles on it. It has the 4 cyl and I noticed that it really is gutless any place to get help for performance on this engine? Most air/exhaust upgrades I've seen are for the 6 cyl and higher. Also, is it possible to add a stock tach. when it didn't come from the factory that way?
Thanks for any help

Message: I thought they ALL had a tach by then. Shows what I know :p
If you have a four cylinder. Only ONE thing to do.... TURBO that biatch for all it's worth! LOL!
You can find some cheap in the junk yards and rebuild them then find someone who knows how to dial it in on your truck.
Other than that. I think a 4 banger will always be gutless I'm afraid. Especially in a heavy Dakota.

Message: have to agree with graphite. I have limited exp with 4 banger dakotas, but an accuantance of mine sank every dollar he could spare into a '95.Just so I could really embarrass the hell out of him with my stock 318.
not to say it coulnt be done but I'd bet youd have more money in the four than it would cost to swap an eight.
my 1$ anyway

Message: It would be a miracle if you were able to squeeze any more horsepower out of that 4 cyl. It's unfortunate that Chrysler even put that under the hood. My first mopar (first car ever) was a '69 Dart Swinger 318 cu. Wish I still had it. My 2nd was a '99 V6 Dak Club Cab. I was so digusted with the lack of power, I started pricing a complete motor swap up to a crate 360 (5.9L). Too much money. Lucked out and found a 2000 R/T club cab, black... and beautiful. I'm keeping 'er until I'm old and ready for a Cadillac :)

Message: Well maybe I need to think about doing a swap. I have a manual tranny so I was thinking a V6. Not sure if an 8cyl will fit. Is a swap worth it or should I just resell the truck and start over?

Message: "is it worth it?" is a matter of opinion. if you got the 4 cyl truck cheap enough and you can find a donor truck, say '97-99 Dak w/ 318 & 5 speed manual it would definitely be worth it (to me anyway). you won't be able to use any of the 4 cyl engine mounts, pcm, tranny engine acc brackets, etc..
if not sell it and try to find the truck you really want. just my .02
