Subject: Brake pad replacement IP: Logged
Message: Have a 2003 Dakota 4x4 QC with the 4.7 and ABS. Brake light went on the other day and then went right back off. Anyway, I'm getting some pretty good grinding out of the front end now, and it's obvious that I need to do brakes. I've never changed pads on an ABS vehicle before- is there anything I really need to worry about or look out for? Usually I'll just break out the c-clamp, change the pads out and inspect the rotor. I don't want to screw anything up, but I also don't want to pay a mechanic if it isn't going to be a hassle to change them.

Message: .boB is correct Jay. If you're *hearing* any
grinding noise, might as well pick up two new
rotors also.
Don't bother to have your old ones turned. Not
worth it! Get ceramic pads also! You'll be glad
you did.

Message: I went the cheap route with my 03 4x4 QC and just had the stock rotors turned. I figured if I can get another 30k out of these the $15 was worth it. :)
And yeah, replacing the pads should be the same deal. Remember that we have double pistons so you'll need to use the C-clamp on the old pad rather than the piston itself so that you can close both pistons up. To be honest the brake job on my Dakota was one of th easiest I've done. I'd recommend spraying a little WD-40 around the lugs and the hub a few minutes before taking the rotors off as they have a tendancy to like to stay.

Message: The stock rotors are crap. The Autozone ones are actually better built and quality than what comes stock. If yours are bad, just get some from them.

Message: The 03 front brakes are much larger than previous years and not as susceptable to warping. The parts are also more expensive, front rotors for an 03-04 are about $70, earlier years $20.
Turn the rotors, install new pads and you should be good to go. I turned my rotors and replaced pads at 35K on my 03 because the OEM pads were crappy and making noise. At 70K I had a hot spot on one rotor, so I turned the front rotors, but kept to old pads since they were in good shape and noise free.
If all goes good I'll be over 100K when the front brakes act up again then it's time for new rotors and pads.

The wear indicator goes on the inboard side.

Message: So the pad with the wear indicator goes against the pistons? I also have another question about the bleeding procedure. the bleeder bolt is different than any I have ever seen before. Can anyone tell me the proper procedure to bleed the brake system?

Message: Ive been hearing grinding in my left front. I have a 03 Dodge
Dakota an it has awd all the time. Not sure if I should change
brakes or if I need to take it to mechanic. Will it mess anything
up if I do it since its awd?
