i've been told wheel adapters are a bad idea but i've also heard that the newer billet ones like this are good. has anyone used them before?

Message: I have some on my kitcar (71 Bradley GT). Its not the rim or tire they are bad for, its your bearings, they cause more stress by putting your wheel out further.

Message: Those are some stout pieces, BigDak, and the price seems fair. They looked so good I almost wanted some myself.
However comma
Bigdave is right. Any time you move the center of the wheel out, you place extra stresses on the wheel bearings, spindles, steering linkages, and last but not least - ball joints.
Also, moving the wheels out 1.5 inches is prone to cause some tire-to-vehicle contact.

Message: but wouldn't the same hold true for aftermarket wheels that have a smaller backspacing? i know that alot of the eagle and american racing rims that people are running have backspacings of 3.5 or 4 inches. stock is something like 5.5 inches right? so i don't see how these could be any worse than buying a new set of rims.

Message: Generally speaking, I wouldn't use them. Unless you already have a set of wheels that are special, and you just have to have them, why would you?
And a new set of wheels would probably have to be custom made. You'd need a wheel with an extra 1.5" of backspace so you could move the center of the tire back where it belongs. If you don't have the correct back spacing, all of the above mentioned problems will crop up.

Message: I want to run wheel adapters on my 1997 dodge dakota 4x4. I want to go from my stock 15 inch rim which is a 6 on 4.5 lug pattern to a 6 on 5.5 lug pattern? Are a nice billet wheel adapters going to cause problems with anything?
Thank you
