Subject: light clicking sound under rear of truck
IP: Logged

Message:
my 2000 4x4 4.7l is getting a weird clicking noise that seems to be coming from underneath the truck, towards the rear but i wouldn't say all the way to the rear end. the clicking sounds like a 10 speed bike that is coasting, or like a/c condensation dripping on a hot exhaust. it only happens during light acceleration, in between 1,500 and 2,500 rpms. the frequency of the clicks seems to be totally unrelated to the rpms. and the noise does not seem to be coming from the engine in any way.

any help? i plan on driving about 900 miles this weekend.

Sounds like the begining of a u-joint failure. Before I got rid of my '00 I started getting the clicking just as you're describing and within a few hundred miles I started getting the usual u-joint vibration. When I traded it in on the trip to the dealership I couldn't drive it past 50 MPH. I would fix it before you go on your trip.

thanks figols. that was actually my initial thinking, esp. since the truck is coming right up to 100k.

does anyone have a 2nd opinion?

Yup. U-joints. I just had the EXACT same thing at 115,000. First the light clicking, then a few days later the U-Joint wobble.

If you do one end of the shaft, do both. My new ones have grease fittings, so I can give them a shot every now and then.

Well I got under there, and couldn't detect any play in the drive shaft. I shot the joints with some grease. I called around Friday afternoon but couldn't find any place that could get me in to do the joints before my trip, so I just decided to go anyway. That might have been pretty stupid of me. Nonetheless the clicking went away after about 300 miles, and she ran great. No wobble or anything feeling off-balance. 900+ miles later and I am back with no more clicking or any other detectable problem.

Was the grease a temporary fix, or could it be something else?

Thanks

i'm still a little nervous about this. i had an explorer about 7 years ago that had to have the u-joints done. i remember that it would vibrate like mad upon acceleration and deceleration.

what other signs should i look for in this truck? if the joints are going will the shaft have any detectable play? i'm afraid if i take it somewhere for them to have a look they are just going to want to replace them anyway. should i just wait and see? i guess i would like a better way to diagnose this since the clicking went away.

also, how much should i expect to pay to have the u-joints done, esp. in terms of labor?

I have this same problem on my 2000 quad cab. Bad squeek and bad vibration while on the gas. I thought it was a bad fan clutch, but I had my dad drive the truck past me slow while I looked for the noise. I'm gonna replace the U joints this weekend.
Now that I think about it after reading another post, I had a squeek from the rear end while turning. I hope the whole rear end is not going.
If it is, I'll get some good gears!
