Subject: pulling boat IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 5.2L and I will be pulling a 18foot steel boat. Total about 2000 pounds by the time I get all the junk in it. I was wondering since I have never pulled anything with ths truck before if I should turn off the overdrive. The roads are flat and its all highway. About 500 miles
thanks

Message: Always turn off the overdrive when towing or hauling. It's in the owners manual.

Message: hey i pull my roommates boat a lot b/c he only has a nissan altima, his brother has a truck but isn't always around. i run my w/ overdrive on, if you are going up or down a hill then i kick the overdrive off just so i don't have to feel the tranny kick back and forth. just make sure if you have an automatic to have a tranmission cooler, or you run the risk of burning up your tranny. make sure the weigh is balanced in the boat and you shouldn't have any problem. sounds like we have similar trucks, mine is 4 wheel drive but yours could be too.

Message: If it's not shifting in and out of O/D it prolly wouldn't hurt to leave it on...if it IS, definitely kick it off since that's harder than hell on the tranny. Also I agree with cook393 about having a tranny cooler...it's a very good idea to have one if you're gonna do any towing.

Message: you should never use the over drive when towing. maybe if your going downhill or flat surface and it doesnt take any effort to keep moving. the o/d unit puts a .65:1 ratio on top of third gear. that means it puts hella strain on the clutches and crap. bad idea.

Message: the tranny fluid doesn`t flow as fast in OD, not cooling as much with OD off.
