Subject: Something Smells like Burning Rubber? IP: Logged
Message: Two days in a row, I smell something that smells like burning rubber, but it comes and goes. Today I drove 30 miles and nothing, but then when I went for a 5mile drive to the store, I smelled it again. I checked the belt and it is fine. Plus it only has about 2,000 miles on it.
The truck runs like it always does. But when the smell comes, it is so strong, but when I pull over and check I can't find anything and the smell is gone. I don't even smell the smell anywhere under the hood. The only rubber I can think it could be is the belt, but it looks like brand new. No signs of any burning. Does anyone have any idea what this can be????

Message: have you checked all your fluid levels? engine, tranny, power steering, transfer case, diffs, etc? plenty of coolant? any hoses or plastic lines under the hood that are melting? something fall onto your exhaust manifolds/pipes?

Message: Just went out to the garage to verify all fluid levels and all is fine with them. I don't see anything touching the exhaust. This smell just seems to come and go (twice over the last two days). I'm sure something is very wrong, but no symptoms besides smell yet. I don't see any hose, belt or line that looks burnt in anyway. This is very frustrating.

Message: Intermitant burning wiring most likely under the dash > Explains why no smell under the hood

Message: i bought a 2002 dakoda quad cab close to a year ago. about 1 week after purchase i noticed a burning smell. what caused it was the plastic piston that applies the calliper for breaking was locking up. I got so bad that the calliper heated up to the point that it caught on fire. Dodge has fixed the problem on both front wheels & replaced the discs, callipers, break lines & pads. after a dvive especially stop & go. smell your wheels

Message: next time check your fuse box, the ground wire that goes into it closest to the engine, make sure it isnt melting, if it is take it somewhere soon! I waited too long and the whole dang box blew up and right now has about a base ball sized hole in it, i got it fixed because the guy had seen it on his dak before and new how to fix it but if u wait too long it could mean a new wire harness that'll set you back about $1500

Message: Do you have an automatic tranny? I've noticed strange plastic like smells for several hundred miles on vehicles coming in for complaint checks, and the'd be some tranny fluid soaked into the exahust manifold. It can take a while to burn off if it's really soaked in.

Message: i had something similar happen to my 98. i was smelling burning plastic and couldn't figure out why. turns out it was one of those stupid plastic plug wire covers on the driver side up by the brake booster and master cylinder had come off and was touching the heat shield and melting. trimmed it off and no more smell.

Message: I had an A/C clutch/pulley roast on my '99 one year that smelt a bit like burning rubber, but more like burnt electronics like wiring. Check for extreme heat on the clutch under the hood next time you smell it. When mine went, there was no warning. In fact, it would've caught on fire if I didn't catch it in time. Good Luck!
