Subject: rancho vs other and problems with rancho IP: Logged
Message: HEy guys i have a 2000 dak with 4.7 L 4x4. I
recently swapped out the original shocks for some
rancho 5000's, thinking that teh ranchos would be
better for it. Well after 3-4 months of riding on
these things i feel i should have gone with
something different. I hadn't realized that
ranchos were cellular gas and not charged!!! I am
thinking about taking them back off b/c i have
lost that nice soft ride. Also has anyone heard of
these shocks being to ruff on these crappy ball
joints??? i recently had the rotors cut and new
brakes put on b/c of teh pulsating, and now i have
this clicking or clonking when i turn the wheels
with and without the brakes on...i notice it more
with the brakes on and when making harder turns
than what is just on the road!?!? does this soudn
like the ball joints are shot??? and do you think
it might have been due to the ranchos??? let me
know what you think??? thanks in advance, john.

Message: I cant see the shocks causing those problems. Rancho shocks will not give you a nice soft street ride. They are made for hard off-roading. I have always liked them on and off road because personally I like a bit stiffer ride, helps out with all the nice rough pot holed roads here. Not sure about the ball joints. Havent had any problems with mine yet.

Message: Well i was thinking about goign back to the
charged gas shocks instead of the cellular. I live
in an area that has a lot of bumps(pa roads suck).
And well the bumps will shake the hell out of
ya!!! so i am not sure what to do yet. Are the pro
comp shocks cellular or charged???

Message: Don't know anything about shocks, but I have replaced my front upper & lower ball joints. They made a creaking, grinding noise when turning, and eventually whenever I went over bumps too. The shop said that the Chrysler ones are crap, I went with better ones with grease fittings.

Message: Hey guys, well just lifted the truck up today and
decided to check those wonderful ball joints we
have, and guess what??? at only 23,000 miles i
have an uppoer passenger side ball joint
failure!!! so that is probably the cause of my
clunking in the front end, i just hope the rancho
5000 shocks weren't the cause of premature ball
joint failure!??!?

Message: From what I understand, the ball joints are pretty crappy- not substantial enough for the weight of that front end. I got aftermarket solid ones - they were a Merry Christmas (@#$%*!!*) present to me.

Message: That would be interesting to read. I've found that I can't trust the local dodge dealership here at all, they had my truck for a full day and still thought that it "might" be ball joints, I would have to bring it back the next day to make sure. I went to a shop recommended by a mechanic friend, they do race cars & trucks, a no b.s. kind of place. They took 5 min. to tell me that it was the ball joints, that it was a common problem, that the dodge dealership sends their ball joint jobs to THEM, then tacks on the extra service, AND charges over $1200 for the parts alone. Which are the same crappy ones- the whole assembly, they don't sell just the ball joint. Whereas, this shop put good aftermarket ones on, I only paid for the ball joints and the labour ($775). It's hard to find a place that you can trust, when i do, I stay there (a good rule of thumb is to stay away from anyplace that has guys in suits - slimy salesmen).
