Subject: I want to thank this site! IP: Logged
Message: Even though I was looking for other information the other day I discovered the sidebar about the upper ball joints. At first I wasn't too worried as I have a '97 4x4 but with 127k on the clock I thought I'd better check into it.
Well, I had a clunking noise for the past few months from the left front that I couldn't locate. Last night I jacked up each wheel and guess what, the right wheel can be moved about 3/16" inward and the left closer to 5/8". The left wheel visibly shifted outward as the weight came off of it.
So, it's off to the auto parts store today to see if they stock replacement upper ball joints. At least now I know the source of the clunk. I have a 2000 mile trip planned for next month and I'm glad I found out about this now.
Thanks again!
- Nate

Message: Check out Rockauto.com. Best prices I have seen on Moog balljoints, which have a grease fitting and are much better than the stock replacements. Do a search and you should find a current coupon code floating around for an extra 5% off the order. Shipping is reasonable too.

Message: The local NAPA store had one ball joint on Friday so I replaced it that evening and the other one arrived by Saturday morning and I installed it on Saturday afternoon. I've worked with ball joints on farm equipment before and was too cheap to look for a better way than just beating on the nut. Well, let me tell you, a pickle fork is the way to go. The job was quite easy with the right tools.
While I was doing that I replaced the shocks as well. It still had the factory originals on it!
As for warranty work, my Dakota is a 1997, this is 2005, and I'm not the original owner. Even if it fell within the recall period, knowing what I know now I would replace them with a replacable/greasable joint. I know a family that bought an '04 Durango last that received a recall notice and another family that bought an older Durango and I spread the word for them to check those joints.
Again, thanks to everyone whether you directly answered a question of mine or that of someone else. Help like this is invaluable and cuts through the BS owners had to endure before forums like this existed.
