Subject: Do I have a Limited Slip differential? IP: Logged
Message: I've been reading some of the posts about the ball joints and differential problems which has got me to thinking. I have a '97 extended cab 4x4. I've yet to jack up the front wheels and see if there is any play in the upper ball joints.
I know I need to change the differential oil as it has a nasty brown quality to it. Looking at the options sticker in the glove box, it says that it has a Chrysler rear differential 8.25. There is no LS or limited slip wording anywhere so I presume that I have a normal differential? I've never noticed any tugging or stuttering while turning tightly that I would expect from a limited slip.
Are there any major issues I should be looking for besides the obvious when I have the cover off?
Thanks, Nate.

Message: there is no obvious issues when pulling the cover off. and according to dc, you should never haveto change that fluid. but i did. im willing to bet its an open diff. 8.25's usually were. could be wrong though. as for the front, always open.

Message: If you jack up the rear and if you spin 1 tire and the other tire goes the same direction then you have a Limited Slip differential.

Message: jayb: My owners manual says the oil in the differentials should be replaced every 36,000 mi. It's in the schedule, but I doubt it was done before I bought it about 15,000 mi ago.
Wakely: Thanks for the tip. I should have known that. Doh!

Message: well i guess they changed their minds then. my 93 manual says to change every 13000 miles under severe use or never if under normal use. i do it anyway though
