Message: It's more than just cams and intake.
Check this difference table out.
Scroll down to the WJ Engine specifications table and you'll see them all. WJ is Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it's the same 4.7L engine.

Message: Thanks for all the info guys. In researching this, I see that the axle ratio makes a much bigger difference in the tow capacity than the high output engine... The only dakotas available right now hav 3.55, but to get the high tow capacity, you need 3.92! What's the point in selling the V8 when all the tow you get out of it is 5600 lbs! Any idea what it would cost to swap that axle?

Message: Yeah, but the lion's share of power difference is in the cams. All the other differences are minor in themselves.
- Even though the cylinder heads are a bit better flowing the same 68mm (65mm really) TB is used.
- The compression raio is a little higher, but only premium gas will let the spark advance take advantage of it.
- The forged crank makes it stronger, not more powerful.

Seems worth it to me.
Distinguishing the 250-plus horsepower High Output Magnum V-8 from the standard output V-8 are new valve springs to control valve motion, a revised combustion chamber shape that increases intake airflow volume, a more aggressive camshaft to increase high-speed airflow, higher compression pistons (9.7:1 vs. 9.0:1) to increase power, a forged steel crankshaft for torsional stability, a revised crankshaft torsional vibration damper, and full-floating wrist pins to enhance durability.

Message: jasonpjohnson: the 3.92 gears and HO engine are available on the '05's now and in fact have been available for several months. Mine has neither (I don't forsee towing more than 5000 lbs and I don't need the extra power) but I know of people who have both.

Message: ptschett: good to know. Thanks. I'm going through carsdirect.com and they can't seem to find one with that gearing... Not a big deal. Maybe it's just not available in California?
I just put a deposit on an '05 laramie quadcab 4x4 with the regular V8 engine and tow package. Gonna be sweet!

Message: Towing capacity isn't determined JUST by the HP. My Dakota has a 4.7, not sure if its HO or not and it pulls my 3600 lb Proline boat like its not evn behind me. MAx tow capacity is also determined by Gross vehicle weight. Something like if your car weighs 5000 lbs, you can't pull a weight so big that its X% more than the car. Otherwise, the weight behind the car could create an unsafe driving condition. Someone else can explain it better. Either way, look at the bigger vehicles, they pull more not just because they have larger engines, its because they weigh more too.
