Subject: Transfer case Fluid Check
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, first time poster here. This may or may not be a dumb question but here goes. I have a 97 4X4 dakota with a leaky tranfer case. I was concerned about the level of the fluid inside so I wanted to check it. I got the car used a year ago so I have no idea when it was checked last. I unscrewed the top plug to stick my finger in to see if the fluid was filled up to the bottom of the hole and before i could do that fluid started pouring out of the hole!!! I quickly re capped it, made sure the car was on level ground, and it was. So i was confused as to why it would pour out of the top plug like that? The case was still a little warm from driving does the fluid expand when it warms up or somthing? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Thats what i thought but the weird thing that sticks out in my mind is how did they get too much fluid in in the first place? You would think if they over filled it it would have poured out then! Unless the jacked the back end up! Anyway do you think I should be concerned?

It's possible the vehicle was not level last time the fluid was topped off. Some jerk may have jacked up only one side of the truck for easier access to the fill hole.

I have '97 as well and was looking through the Owners Manual last night and found that the transfer case is specified to use ATF2 or Mopar 7176 fluid only. While the automatic transmission has the same specification, the manual says Dexron III can be used if nothing else is available. So, what should I look for since I'm not near a Dodge dealer any more?
