Message: charge it until the air coming out pass side vent, on max a/c setting, is between 38-40 degF. or about 30-32psi suction press w/comp running.

Message: what year is it
if it's 134a they will have goof proof adapters
if it's r12 they will have shraeder valves
if it's r12 high side is where you put the gas in
it's the side that gets cold near the dryer
regardless of refrigerant if system was opened (ie:componet changed) it should be evacuated/air pumped out you can retrofit r12 to 134a but effeciency will be low compared to factory componets
id it's low on 134a they make a o ring conditioner oil and charg all in one can

Message: shdow don't know. the high side is NOT COLD. it is HOT. simple physics, compress anything enought and it will heat up.

Message: You charge it on the low side (that one gets cold and sweaty) If you were able to charge it on the high side, the can would blow up in your face!!! the fitting on the high side won't fit suction guage. 35 # back pressure is the number your looking for. with about 200 rpm's too. 91 should be R12 unless it was converted.

Message: low side high side one thing I know for sure it goes in the side that gets cold and 134a has two diff adapters that can't be mistaken for unlike the shreader valves on r12 system
thanks for correction

Message: They made the High side connection larger on the R12 systems also to prevent from someone trying to charge it on the high side. But back in the 70's they were both the same.

Message: On R12 systems the high side service port is smaller than the low side. You're right, don't charge the high side. If you don't know the refrigerant capacity a good rule of thumb is the evaporator inlet & outlet temps should be about the same while the a/c is operating.

Message: Your right AZDAK, it is smaller on the high side. My blow. Dont know what u mean by the same temp on inlet and outlet, but the best rule of thumb is a cold sweaty suction line at the compressor.

Message: You're right, that's a pretty good guideline and I don't want to sound like a know it all because I'm far from it, but from my experience I have found that if the outlet temp of the evaporator is warmer than the inlet It's undercharged. Just my opinion. A/C is always an interesting topic as everyone seems to have a different opinion.

Message: I don't know it all either, I am an A/C mechanic though. Mostly domestic and commercial but only do auto a/c as a hobby. Its all pretty much the same theory though. All about heat exchange. But no matter what the system, the suction line is almost always cold and sweaty near the condensor/compressor. Nothing beats putting in the correct charge with a scale though. Talk to ya later.
