Subject: I need to replace front seats
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an '03 QC with the 40/20/40 front seats. They are standard, no power, not even a lumbar adjustment and they're terribly uncomfortable. I've tried seat cushions, you name it but nothing helps. It's about $1500 to replace with power/lumbar support seats from the dealer....no way. Anyone have any ideas of where I can find good replacement front seats? I love my truck except the seats. I can't take the pain in my lower back. My wife's malibu is much more comfortable so we take it on trips 30 min or more. Help!!! I'm going to sell it soon if I can't do anything about it.
Thanks for your help/advice!

I have the same truck but with power seats. They are not back friendly either. Have you tried the"back hugger". It`s about 12" high and pushes your lower back out, supports it a lot better and keeps you from slumping. I bought one from my chiro and it cut my back pain by 75% when my lower back was out. I use it all the time now, pain or no pain. I`d be interested in a new seat as well.

I had the same problem with my '04 QC. I found the lumbar
support backrest from Sharper Image to do the trick. Mine was a
present, but I bet they cost around $60- $70.
Certainly cheaper than new seats, and if it doesn't work, take it
back.
I commute around 120 miles/day, had my back feels much
better with the backrest than without.
Good luck with your search.

I have factory electric electrics in my '01. I find them very comfortable. I can easily do a 15 hour day in them. Try the bone yards.

I'm disappointed to hear that the power seats aren't any better, go figure. I haven't heard about the "back hugger" or lumbar support from Sharper Image. I'll do a search for both and check them out. Thanks for the help!

try calling around to all the bone yards and finding leather dak seats, they might be more comfortable than the stocker seats, or maybe just try shopping around for a really good set of seat covers, i too have a quad dak but mine is a 2000 and the seats in there have had it, it's like sitting in a wooden chair sometimes and when you move around to try and get comfortable the whole seat moves alittle (sh!ty seat track) but i think i will prolly get some good dodge ram head seat covers and stuff them sons of b!tches with foam before i put them on.

My truck looks like it was in a knife fight, and lost! http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1275365

Try looking for Durango seats. I've ridden in a 03 Durango and find the bucket seats are more comfortable, with more adjustments and better padding than the buckets in my 02 QC.

talking about seats

this 1998 I have I tried to remove the front driver seat back bolts with a 18mm impact socket it cracked the socket in two places using a 1/2 breakbar

I can't get the driver's seat to move backwards or forwards what's up with all the cables underneath it is there a magic locking mechanism to it got me stumped

makes the ext cab access worthless without the seat movement

I just purchased the back rest Maggadog refers to from Sharper Image this afternoon. I drove 20 min. home from the mall and it seems to make a big difference. It cost $80 but it's cheaper than replacing the seats. I'll give this a try for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.
Anyone know if Durango seats would fit the Dakota?...just curious.

I have a 2000 CC and 40 20 40 bench model.
I never ever had any seat more improperly designed than this.
The "built in" lombar support, is much more like a "lungar" anatomic deformation.
The sollution was start to play w/ it, and after about + or - 4 sessions , i basicly had it all paded up to embrace my lower back , as well as more support and less saging on the bottom part.
I used white cedar shingles for the beding and different thickness and density foams.
I didn`t really do it until the 4th trying, where i had most of the seat opened.
Not difficult at all. Just follow your anatomy

I had the same issues with my '00 Dakota seats! I have 2 compressed discs and things tended to get a little tender in that area after 2 or more hours. I took the seat apart a saw what a piece of junk the seat really is! My desk chair is built better!! I noticed that the seat actually bends over time in the lumbar area because all it is is two 1/8 inch rods that go from the top of the seat frame to the bottom, with a few cross beams of the same thickness. And NO I'M NOT OVERWEIGHT!! A seat should be able to hold 160 lbs very easily! I first bent them back in to shape, but that only lasted a day or so. I tried several different things to try to permanently build back the lumbar support. I eventually found that a broom handle worked very well. I simply cut it to length and zip tied it in. My next more permanent step was to install an electric lumbar kit, but I never got around to it before I got rid of the truck. Here is the link for the kit if you're interested http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/seatheatac.html

The other weak spot is the quality of the seat bottom. I replaced the weak OEM springs with some stronger, shorter springs from Home Depot. This kept the bottom from sagging. I found that the saging bottom would place my lower back in a void of support on the seat back.

I spent a lot of time on this issue and I tried lots of different tricks. The above mentioned is what worked for my particluar back problem.

Josh, if he is not interested in the seats I am. I have been thinking about ditching my 40/20/40 setup and going with the buckets, but have put it off. Now my driver side seat is broken, so I need to get new ones, and have been looking, but haven't found anything yet. I have an 02, with grey interior. If you get some pics email me at, reut74@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Hey what about going into a dealer and ordering just the lumbar assembly then take your seat apart and put it in. I do seat benchmarking and sometimes i have to get seats in pieces and put them together in fact the 2005 dakota is one of those seats and im still waiting for parts for it
