Subject: 3923 plugs IP: Logged
Message: I have a Ram 1500 fullsize truck and just installed the colder plugs in my 3.9 engine with the 5 speed manual transmission. Idles smoother, pinging seems to be gone (for what limited driving I did). Just thought I should share this info with you all. FWIW the book calls for these plugs as the recommended colder Autolite plug for this application.

Message: We know that mang! if you would have been reading other posts, you would have found that most people usually change to that plug and the brass contact cap and rotor set up within the first year of ownership.

He just wanted to share some info that validated the claims of others.
A simple "Thanks" would have sufficed, instead you flame him.
Go easy. Some day, he may have the answer you need.

Message: Because we share the same engine and drivetrain. For some years the PCM can even be swapped out.

Message: I use this Dakota forum because most Daks have the 3.9 but most fullsize have the bigger engine. More info here for my truck than on the Ram forums. BTW I got the idea for the 3923 plugs here but upon doing a search I found mixed opinions. The main problem I was having was pinging. I drove it around today for about 20 miles and no pinging whatsoever with 87 octane gas. I will give an update later when I put some more miles on the plugs. I will try the brass cap when it is due for another tuneup.

Message: So how does that thing run with the smaller engine? I'd imagine it's like our truck with the 4 cyl.

Message: I just replaced my 3923s for the new E3 plugs.
I got tired of replacing them every + - 15k. At that point, they are not failing too bad, but rather, very inefficient, specially noticeable w/ could engine, at the lower side of tac and 15 to 20% worse gas mileage
The 3923 plugs, may be a great help if you experiment pinging, because they do not go as deep into the chamber, and making it simple, kind of slowing the explosion in the chamber, or "retarding" it by creating a longer path for the spark to enconter w/ the air-gas mix.
After 400 miles w/ the one step hotter than the 3923s E3 plugs, i can asure that the idle is imperceptible, no could engine miss fireing and no pinging at all.
I always use super, other wise it will ping, cause a got the JET2 crapchip.
I need better plugs than 3923s.

Message: Actually with the 6 cyl. engine and 5 speed you really don't notice the lack of power until you get into the mountains or tow something. Then you will hear the six cylinder scream for mercy. The truck is very dependable and gets good gas mileage too (has been getting an average of 19 mpg). I have owned it since new and it seems like the fullsize have a few less problems than the dakotas. For example there are no issues as far as I know with ball joints, brakes rotors, etc.

Message: Yep, just a plain truck to be used as a truck. It gets the job done and looks pretty decent too. I added the 40/20/40 seat from an SLT and got the 5 spoke alloy wheels from the junkyard in surprisingly good condition. Makes it look like a different truck. From what I can tell the drivetrain is the same as the Dakota. With the exception of a few minor issues both fullsize and Dakotas seem like very nice trucks that will last for a long time.
