Subject: front end squeak IP: Logged
Message: i am getting a loud squeak from my front end on my 99 dak 4x4 318. seems to be coming not from ball joints (replaced them a year ago), but from bushings nearby on the upper arm (? - not sure what to call it), near where shock is attached. can't find a grease zerk anywhere. do i need to replace the bushings? if so, will this necessitate an alignment afterwards?

Message: Are you sure it's not coming from the sway bar bushing on the control arm? That is the most common source for front end squeaking.

Message: Not sure of the name of the part, sway bar sounds right. Is that part of the suspension, or steering? It is definitely a bushing that is squeaking, and it is part of the suspension, not steering. It's only movement is up and down.

Message: Sway bar bushings. Very common, been written about here many many times.
Remove the bushings, clean, apply Mobile 1 synthetic wheel bearing grease, reassemble.

Message: Thanks .boB,
Does the truck need to be jacked up to do this? Does it affect alignment?
Thanks again.

Message: Found a loose upper control arm nut on my 98 causing the same problems but it's 2wd. Still might be worth checking.

Message: No. It's a real easy job. Park it on flat ground, remove the steel end retainers and the bar will just swing down. I was doing this every 6 months or so since I bought the truck in 2000. I was using NAPOA synthetic grease. It worked well, but didn't last long. A little over a year ago I used Mobile 1 wheel bearing grease. Havn't had to do it since.
