Message: I did buy another Dak! Went from and '01 CC 4x4 to an '04 Quad 4x4.
I loved the first truck but it was too small inside for our needs plus it had multiple tranny seal leaks and the rotors had to be turned @ 14,000 and again at 30,000 miles.
I've driven the '05 Quads and they ride much better than the previous version but...
The new design screwed up the suspension the front approach angle changed so much I'm practically scraping the ground going up my property whereas in the '04 there's mucho room to spare.
Like Dak2Dak and dakkid I'm probably in this truck for the very long haul; 100,000 + miles. I'll have had the '04 for 11 months this Sunday when it'll turn over 18,775 miles and I'll have only done oil changes and the 12,000 mile warranty visit...

Message: As far as performance and reliability, yes. Looks of the Gen IV has yet to grow on me though.
My truck is an '03, 4x4, 4.7 v8, SLT, QC, 3.92, which I purchased new. It just turned 75k yesterday. So far, I have only replaced the tires (@67k miles).
I've had no issues w/ ball joints, brakes, water on the floor, or anything else. I haven't even replaced the brakes yet, as there is no need to. It has never needed an alignment, although it was checked after I had an accident this winter.
No leaks, squeaks, overheats, nothing. It really is a bit of a boring truck, there hasn't been anything that went wrong, but I'm not complaining!
I tow with it, a two-horse trailer and also a large utility trailer. Between 2500 and 5000 lbs., depending.
My truck is pretty reliable, and eventually it will be fitted for a snow plow when it gets old and not road worthy anymore, which I feel safe to say will be a few years.
By this time next year, it will have over 100k on it. Just take care of it, and don't beat on it. If you do beat on it, well then don't complain.

Message: "IMO there are 2 keys to a regret-free vehicle purchase - 1) buy preowned at a good price, and 2) search for exactly the vehicle (engine/tranny, color, options, etc.) you really want. This second one is important because if you do end up having to fix alot of problems you'll still be happy (and you'll most likely still be way ahead of buying new). And with a used vehicle many of the initial QC-related problems have already been fixed" (99DAK)
"Overall, I don't have a big issue with sh*t breaking -that's a given with any vehicle." "When I was 20 I had no qualms about fixing sh*t, 20 years later I now have other priorities!" (John K)
"Same as dakkid here. Im driving mine till it falls completely apart on me."(Dak2Dak)
I agree with all of the above! I did drive mine ('00 QC)until it fell apart on me. Unfortunately that was at 83K easy miles!! I had to get rid of it because it had too many QC related problems and I have other priorities these days that don't include fixing my relatively new truck every 3K miles. I did love the Dakota for all it's positives, but the negatives far out weighed those positives so I cut my loses and traded it in. I've always been a GM guy and have always had good luck with them so I unloaded the Dakota and bought a Sierra. The Dakota was a fluke purchase anyway, but I did have high hopes for it (especially since Mercedes owns Dodge). I've never had any good experiences with Dodge products since the mid 90's. Too many problems with minivans, Neons and Stratuses (within the family)and yet I go out and buy a Dakota! Foolish me!! For some reason I thought Dodge trucks were still tough like they used to be in the 80's. They were ugly back then, but boy were they bullet proof!! I was wrong! I bought the Dakota new and had one stupid problem after another with it.
In regards to what 99DAK suggested about buying used....I've never bought a used truck because 1, trucks are typically abused more than cars are and 2, trucks tend to hold their resale value better than cars so you're not always saving enough money buying a 2 year old truck with 30K miles to out weigh buying new. Case in point, I bought my new '05 Sierra for $26K (sticker was 37K) and the dealership had a '02 with 45K miles for $22K. Which would you buy? I see this at all of the dealerships. I'll buy a used car in a heart beat though.
But, to answer the question, NO I will never buy another Dodge or Chrysler product again, for obvious reasons.

Message: I bought an 03 QC after wrecking my 00 CC. The 00 CC was a great truck outside of the common Dak problems, brakes and ball joints. Loved my OO CC and love my 03 QC.
One thing I hate about my 03 QC is that it had the 3/36 and still has the 7/70 warranty. It's a miracle if the dealership repairs anything and if they do it takes multiple trips,,, at least my dealership is that way. I had a couple of warranty repairs after I bought the truck and it took 5-6 trips to get them resolved. Heck, I got tired of them dickin with the tranny leak after 3 trips and resealed the pan myself.
The only dissatisfaction I have with my Dak is the dealership,,, and they want me to come back to buy a new vehicle and have it serviced there?

Message: I have a 2000, CC, 4.7L, 4x4, Sport Package with over 110,000 miles on it that I bought new, and I've had virtually no problems with it. There are several Dodge/Chrystler dealerships in the area, and two of them are excellent when it comes to service.
I probably won't buy another Dakota, mainly because I've acquired a family since I initially bought my truck, and we need some additional space. A full-size four door truck or sedan will likely be my next vehicle purchase, and I have no plans to get rid of the Dakota.

Message: I`ll buy whatever has the best power/weight relation. If it looks as good as the 3rd generation Daks, better yet. The 2005 model has no room in my garage. It is too big and too painfull to look at.
I had some difficult w/ the dealer, but at the end of my 7/75 extended warranty, i was able to get a brand new NV3500 trans and new 3.92 LS diff.
Every problem i had, was promptly fixed, and wasn`t just a few.
3 times b joints w/ arms, top, bottom, left and right,
Seased AC compressor, serpentine belt and clutch fun, (later relocated to the cellar, (store it standind up)),
Dash completelly dismantled in search of vibration, fixed.
Many returns to realignament and touch ups etc.
When the bj recall came, i replaced all w/ MOOG and sent the bill to DC for reimbursement of the upper ones. That makes 4 suspention replacements paid by DC, and i can`t say that they did not honored their obligation w/ our contract.
Sorry for getting out of subject, but dealing w/ dealers will make or brake your experience.

I like my Dak over all. Its been a pretty good truck but plagued with all the Dak problems, brakes, balljoints, rack etc etc. I have about 85k on my 02 qc 4.7l 4x4 now and its starting to need some work. Im actually thinking about a new truck because the prices are so good right now but it will be Ram Hemi not a Dakota.

I disagree. As to 1, maybe 20 years ago, but most light truck sales today are more fashion statement than utilitarian. These days you're just as likely to find a pampered, well maintained truck as a car. Whether or not a vehicle is abused has more to do with the personality of the owner than the type of vehicle.
And 2, your example of a 3 yr old 45Kmi truck selling for 85% of new is not at all typical. Not only does my own experience (see my earlier post) refute this, but according to Automotive Lease Guide, 3yr old pickups retain, at best, less than 60% of their (new) value.

Message: I bought my dakota new in 04. I was looking for something a bit larger than a compact, also wanted more power than my nissan had and 4wd with a decent stance. I was able to get the Dakota with all that for 18k. The dealership has been nothing short of fantastic! Every little problem has been fixed without a complain. I recently joined a offroading club and regularly run various parks in texas. The truck now had 18,000 miles and has strapped over 30 trucks, including hummers. Never once overheats in the texas heat and performs excellent both on and offroad. I would buy another dodge, but another Dak probably not, the 05's are just too ugly
