Message: Well friday my tranny went out on my 94 dakota. I called a couple junkyards and tranny shops and the tranny is spendy. The tranny shop told me that I need a shop to put it in since it is electronic controled. is that true? they told me I will need a new radiator when it goes in too. I was also told the trannys for the year 94 and 95 will work or can I go with a different years? the truck is a 94 ext. cab 4wd 318 auto tranny.

Message: The tranny from 1989-1995 will work. The only electronic controls on these trannys are for overdrive control and torque converter lockup. From 1996 on, they have electronic valve bodies, and require the OBDII computer to operate. The prices are in line with what I have seen. The radiator replacement is probably a good idea. As a tranny fails, it throws trash into the fluid, and a lot of it settles in the tranny cooler in the radiator.....just waiting to clog and destroy the new tranny.
