Subject: 96 dakota running crappy IP: Logged
Message: i have a 96 dakota 3.9 v6 and lately the check engine light has come on and it has been kind of bogging down and stalling in low gears. also it takes a while to start and then on the second or third try it'll start up but then stall when i put it in gear. after getting on the freeway and driving a couple minuites the problem goes away but i'm wondering what this problem sounds like to anyone?
thanks,

Message: if the check engine lights on there are stored trouble codes. best thing for you to do is go to your local Auto Zone and have them pull the codes. It's FREE!!! that will more than likely tell us why your truck is runnin' crappy!

Message: i am having a simular problem with my 1998 CC w/ the 2.5L. The check engine light has been coming on for the past month or so. The truck would bogg down or hesitate when pulling out of intersections. The check engine light would go on for a few days, the problem would be gone and the same with the light. Reciently it has gotten worse. Pulling out of the beach i had the clutch in and it stalled on me. It has been idleing rough, and acting like it wants to stall and while driving with steady throttle it will bogg down then kick back in. It is very inconstsitent. Anyone with any info please help.

Message: ok i took it to autozone and came up with a code po171 and was told that means the o2 sensor is bad so i got a 40 dollar bosh unit and when i tried to install it the connector was round on the truck but square from the actual sensor so i took it back and they gave me a different one that was 35 bucks more (that sucks) and that one fits fine and seems to fix the problem EXCEPT when i start the truck it immediately dies unless i give it gas. i think somehow it made the idle too low. how do i adjust the idle?
thanks

Message: chris--i am a total amature, but my thoughts are that with the new o2 sensor in, your pcm may have to relearn its idle. i would suggest finding out how to reset the pcm on your '96.
when my '00 had a similar problem with stalling unless i gave it gas, i reset the pcm and it worked like a charm.

Message: Check/clean the sensors in your TB. IAC for sure. If it is gummed up the idle will suffer. Also check your plugs for any fouling.

Message: Sounds like the same problem but we had it with my DH's Ford Ranger. It was one of the sensors, plus the gas line was clogged. Out of the shop now, it runs like new. He also tried the resetting but it wasn't a 'stay-put' fix.
