Subject: Which dakota to get?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi everyone,
I'm looking into buying a dodge dakota. Year of 2000-2003.
Is there differences/changes to the truck in those years if yes what kind?

I'm looking into buying the V6, two and a half doors not sure what is the model name (how bad is it on fuel consumption?)

Looking for some advise of common problems with this truck and is it a good choice to hawl a dirtbike in its bed (will a DRZ400 fit the with the tailgate closed?)

Thank you for any input.

#1) no diff between those years(minor interior changes)
#2) if you want to tow get a V8(minimal diff iin mileage)

#3) no such thing as 2 & 1/2 doors, 2 door reg cab or Club Cab, 4door Quad Cab

#4) RC & CC have 6.5' beds, QC has a 5.5' bed

hope this helps

Helps a lot, Thank you.

So I can get a reg cab with 5.5'bed or 6.5' bed right? Same goes for Club cab?

Is it 2 sits in the reg cab or 3?

Will 5 people fit in the Club cab? or its made for 4 persons.

Thanks again

RC- w/o center console can sit 3(although with a manny trans would be uncomfortable).
CC- w/o center console could sit 6(the 3 in the back better be small)
QC - w/o center console can seat 6 comfortably w/auto trans. i have a manual tranny in my '00 QC and i really don't enjoy having someone sitting in the middle of the front seat on long drives.

Did not know that about an hour ago but aperantly there is 4cylendered dakotas?

How are they on fuel consuption?

Or are they not even worth bohering with?

I dont need this truck for racing I need it to be able to get my dirtbike to riding places and drive it everyday. Without burning a gas like crazy.

the only way i would consider a 4 cyl dak is a stripped down 5 speed manual w/o air or power anything. if you get a v6 definitely get the 5 speed.

dak's are the heaviest small trucks on the road. so don't expect phenominal gas mileage. in my '00 QC 3.9, 5sp manny, 3.55 gears and 235/75/15 tires i average about 21-22mpg highway. and that's not revving over 2500rpm or driving over 65mph. city is like 16-17mpg. my QC probably weighs in @ 4200-4400lbs.

If your looking at a Dakota's you might want to consider a V8, the 4.7L V8 gets almost as good of mileage as the V6's, but the 5.2L and 5.9L V8's will get worse mileage than a V6. Dak's are heavy and you need to get an engine that's not struggling to push the truck.

My 03 Quad Cab 4.7 auto tranny gets 19MPG on the hwy at 80MPH, don't know about city as I am always on the freeway. My old 00 CC would get 19-20 MPG going 80 MPH. Slowing down to 65 MPH picks up 1-2 MPG since you realy start to fight the trucks aerodynamics at higher speeds.

My old 00 CC could only fit 3 people in it comfortably, me, wife and 3 year old in a car seat in back. Once I had me, wife, kid in car seat in back and baby in baby seat in front,,, but I would not do that again. If you have kids that don't need car seats or small adults you could get 4 in there comfortably, 2 back, 2 front. Big/tall/average adults are not going to sit in the back of a CC for very long before they start to bich-n-wine.

My 03 will seat 4 adults comfortably, only room for 2 in front. The back seat will hold 2 adults and a kid fine, but 2 kids in car seats and an adult is a tight fit, good enough to go 20-30 miles, but I wouldn't want to go on a road trip.

The only thing I would specifically look for is a truck with rear dics brakes. Dak's have crappy front brakes (00,01,02) and the trucks with rear disc brakes (03,04) have larger front brakes. I don't know if this holds true for all models as you might find an 01 with rear disc's and small front brakes or an 03 with rear drum brakes and large front brakes. But, if the truck had 15" wheels it doesn't have the larger front brakes, they won't fit in 15" wheels.

Well I got a SLT 02 QC 5 speed manuel,3.92 gears, 287 cid V8 with SuperChip (might go to hyperchip)

Also the fuelmilage is even better with a shift it your self transmission. Now of course the 04 mods offerd a 5 speed auto and introduced a new generation 3.7L V6 thats gets better millage than the older 318 based V6.

whatever you buy will be much better if it comes w/ the LS differencial. Better yet w/3.92 rear end and a 5 manual.
Do not desconsider the v8 thinking that it uses too much gas. If you knowhow, it can be more e
conomic than the V6s, w/ lots of xtra power.
The prob area in my truck, (2000), was the ball joints, replaced 3 times under warranty and than, one more time after the recall, but this time replaced all b joints w/ moog, and got reimbursed by DC for the upper ones. Prob solved.

Thanks for all the responces so far.

So V8 or V6 ...not much difference in fuel, mucho difference in power. Got it

I am looking for the CC not interested in the QC at all. now...does the CC comes as a 4x4 vith a V6 and V8? (Im talking years of 2000-2003)

And is the 4x4 can be switched off/on(its not a full time 4x4 right?)

Demon;
You can get a CC 2000 - 03 in 4x4 as either a V6 or V8.
They come with "electronic shift on the fly" which is driver controlled by a knob on the lower right of the dash just below the right side of the speedo/gauge cluster.
FT 4x4 can be found in SLT Plus setups the 2 I've seen have both been 2003 SLT Plus Quads.

DSW really nailed the specs.

I will add that a QC Dak like mine has MORE room than a 4 door sedan.

If you ever plan on hauling around some friends (which could happen if you get a V8 and start to tow other ppl's bikes/ATV's like I do) you will like the QC a lot.

My bed DID hold my ATV's one at a time just fine and with the tail gate closed.

Once I installed a truck box I have to leave the tail gate DOWN but it still fits fine. Just have to use ratcheting straps to keep the ATV in there.

Also a point to clear up. The V8 and V6 probably gets about the SAME MPG driving the same way to maintain speed, etc.

But the V8 naturally WILL use more gas when you romp the piss out of it like I do to mine all the time. It's hard to keep you foot out of it sometimes because it's too much fun..

I never considered a V6 for a second, and drove the salesmen nuts when I wouldn't except anything without a V8 :)

To Clear Up something. The 318 is an 8 cylinder, not a 6 cylinder. I have the 4.7 and would never trade it for a 6 cylinder. The 4.7 had more power than the truck will ever need, in the subject of towing/hauling. I had a mazda p/u with the 2.3 liter engine. The AC would shut off if I "got on it" (like I could with that puny engine). Go for the 8 cylinder, it will make you a bazillion times happier over the long run.
