Message: Hey y'all,
Its time to change the Tranny fluid in my 2000 4.7L Auto. Anyone done this yet? I HATE bringing my truck or motorcycle to the dealer for repair, so I am try to do oil changes, grease jobs, and general repairs by myself.
Any tips/suggestions for the cleanest and quickest job or should I just set up an appointment? I take it I need a few quarts of ATF and a tranny filter, right? Any tricks I should keep in mind?
Thanks.

Message: To me its easy to change the trans fluid. You will need a filter and gasket kit. about for mine i needed 6 quarts of ATF+3. The best way to take the pan off is to remove the rear pan bolts and loosen the front one so the pan tips back and the fluid will drain out easy. Here is a nice trick I did to save time and future messes. Some parts stors sell a plug kit to install into your pan, all you have to do is drill a 1/2" hole. And the next time you have to change fluid all you do is remove the plug and let it drain... just like the engine oil :)

Message: I had mine done a couple of months ago. I had the dealer do it... and I'm glad I did. There is something new/different about the 2k tranny. It has three filters and some kind of new fluid. It was a little spendy... but I thought it was worth it. In the past with other vehicles, I took them to oil-change outfits for tranny service... and they never messed with filters. If you do it yourself, just make sure you get all of the filters (call the dealer and make sure) and correct fluid. I have heard about a lot of problems with Dodge trannys in the past... so I wanted to make sure this was done right. Apparently the 2k Dak has a 'new generation' tranny in it (something was changed to address better filtration).

Message: If you're going to start doing it yourself, I would suggest putting in a draig plug in the pan the first time. It can get pretty messy without one ! I got mine at NAPA auto parts for about 5 or 6 bucks. Makes the tranny changes much easier and less messy.

Message: Also use the type 7176 ATF+4, do NOT use a substitute fluid. for more on this issue, visit www.allpar.com.
Mopar trannies are VERY sensitive to the type of fluid used and you must use mopar fluid lest you run the risk of frying your trans.

Message: What mileage do you guys suggest for a first time tranny service on the 2k dakotas with the 4.7L? I've heard a lot of different mileages? Thanks.

Message: All the above plus DO NOT overtighten the pan bolts. You will flatten the gasket and when the bolts stretch (only minute but enough) you will experience leaks. It is better to tighten to required torques and recheck after a few days to a week later. I learned this the hard way. $$$$.(in about three gasket sets and finally a dealer sevice, only to be told that I had overtightened)

Message: I agree with the dealer service. I normally do all my own work, but instead of just dumping the pan and changing the filter, I want the fluid changed in the torque converter as well and the proper fluid used. So, I am heading to the dealer to let them do the complete service, as well as changing the fluid in the differential.
Should be about $300 altogether, but I want it done right. One local, "Mr. Transmission" told me that ATF+3 would work fine in my Dak...that is when I showed him the TSB from DC about ATF+4 and hit the door saying that I would be in a very bad mood if my tranny got the wrong stuff put in it and I had to purchase a tranny.
By the way, I have had no luck finding ATF+4 on any auto parts shelves..I will be buying the Amsoil stuff to keep my Dak topped off after the change.
Just my two cents..

You'll be using the AMSOIL fluid you said? Ihave that sitting in my garage when im ready to change my fluid. Are you having the dealer switch it out to AMSOIL? Let me know how it runs with it in if you decide to do it. I took mine to the dealer and they were iffy if they wanted to put that in. I guess they were unsure of the product but i spoke with a tech rep. from AMSOIL and he reassured me that there's meets and exceeds the Mopar stuff, even have it in writing. Im gonna dump it in just have to find the time to take it in.

Message: No, I am just using the amsoil for "topping off". I am letting the dealer put in the DC brand. I have looked at the amsoil and it does meet the specs required, but I doubt that I can get a dealer to switch it. I am having him flush the TC and then drop the pan and replace the filter as well. Will cost me about $200, but that is cheap to me.
I could not find anyone that would flush and drop the pan and use Amsoil so I am going to let the dealer do the work. The one here in Atlanta seems to have a good reputation for their work.

Message: I have not been able to find ATF+4 in any stores..either amsoil or something I will have to buy from the dealer. My guess is that amsoil is cheaper.

Message: Just going to keep a little for topping off till the next trans change...its normal to have a small amount lost during usage. Just a quart or two just in case I need it.

Message: Just had the dealer service the tranny. He did an entire flush first, then dropped the pan and replaced the filter. I also had him service my lsd while he was at it. It looks to me as if the tranny had never been serviced. WOW, what a difference in shifting. Before, it would stick in second sometimes, now it shifts perfectly. Glad I had it done by the pros at Hayes Chrysler/Dodge in Lawrenceville, GA.
