According to my Haynes manual for 94-99 (assuming '00s are similar enough): raise the front-end on
jack stands, turn the wheels straight forward and lock the steering wheel by wrapping the driver's seat belt around it and set the buckle, make an index mark from the end of the steering shaft coupler (U-joint) to the Rack and pinion input shaft and remove the pinch bolt from the coupler, detach the tie-rods, remove the power steering connections and remove bolts from the rack to crossmember. If you are replacing your R/P, I would also measure the length of both tie-rods and count the exposed threads at each end, then transfer these measurements to the new ones. The wheels should still be straight forward when the new R/P is installed. It's important to not allow the steering wheel to move when the steering column is disconnected because it can cause damage to the clock spring in the steering wheel and you need to preserve the position of the steering wheel to keep the steering column indexed at the straight forward position.
I would also take this oppurtunity to flush the power steering pump with new fluid. When all is back together, bleed the power steering to work out the air in the lines. Fill the resevoir to the cold full and start the engine and allow to idle for a few minutes. Check the fluid level and refill if needed. Turn the wheels from left to right several times without hitting the stops and keep the fluid level full. Keep the engine running and road test, making sure the steering works normally without noise. Re-check fluid level, make sure it's at full hot. It's also recommended to have the front-end aligment checked to make sure the tie-rods are correct unless you're sure it's driving good and you got the measurements right. Hope this helps.

Are you having problems with your steering?

I have looseness and feedback in my steering wheel and I've found some free rotation in my rack-and-pinion. I wonder if my R/P is bad and I've been contemplating changing it. I've looked at a couple of part store websites and they show a cost of about $150 with a core value of about $120. Seems too good to be true.
