Subject: Question on front axle seal replacement IP: Logged
Message: I had my Dakota (2000 CC bought new, 4.7L, 4x4, 109,000 miles) in for service last week and the mechanic told me that my front axle seals were starting to leak ever so slightly and to keep an eye on them. My question is that if I am going to pay to have them replaced, is there anything else worth replacing or checking if they are going to pull that much apart?
Thanks in advance for any assistance or suggestions.

Message: Did he mean to say your pinion seal? I don't know what a front axle seal is. I just had a pinion seal replaced, it was a $20 part.
I wouldn't mess around with your axle and watching for a leak you have know way of easily seeing how much fluid you have lost. You'd have to look every time you get in your truck.

Message: BBQ,
My front right axle seal is leaking too. I priced the parts out and it looks like the seal is about $20, and the bearing is about $30. You have to remove the axle so you may as well do the bearing while you are there for the seal.
After reading through the manual, It looks like a job that you could do in your driveway with the right tools (no special tools required)
The only other thing to look at when you pull the front cover off the diff. is the gears. If they look good, leave them alone.

Message: Much appreciation for the reponses.
These are the only posts I've ever made here, but I've been reading this forum for a while now. Great place for information and help on anything about Dakota trucks.
