Subject: Diagnosing Inter. Shaft. IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys! Over the last couple days, i've been noticing a slight 'lump' in the steering wheel when making usually righthand turns over uneven pavement. I'm suspecting a loose intermediate shaft but don't know how to check for it. If anyone has any insight please let me know.
Thanks!

Message: Grab the shaft and pull it back and forth like you would check the u-joints on your driveline and if you can feel slop in the joints - it is bad!

Message: If you have a 4x4, you should be able to see it through the wheel well opening. Mine was so bad you could actually see the slop in the lower u-joint while someone turned the wheel slightly back and forth. The upper u-joint is above the rag joint, under the brake vacuum booster. It is more difficult to check since you have to get under the truck. If it is bad, it's likely the lower joint since it constantly gets 'spray washed' when driving on wet pavement.
The symptom on my truck was slight steering slack noticeable when driving straight ahead, or when parked (engine on or off.) It was not noticeable when turning, since there is constant torque on the shaft one direction or the other.
If I were you, I would also check the ball joints and tie rod ends, they are more likely culprits to cause the symptoms you describe.
