ya know, if i had the problems you had, i'd get rid of the dak, but i wouldn't buy a gm. they are the worst looking trucks on the road right now, and even if they did last longer, you're just ganna be drivin that ugly thing even longer. if i got rid of my dak, which i don't plan on, i damn sure wouldn't go straight to a gm dealer unless i was gettin a vette.

I doubt that will happen with the iron sleeves. No more so than a full cast iron block anyway. Look around....aluminum blocks have been around for a while now. Most higher end and foreign cars have aluminum blocks and if you'll notice, a lot of domestic cars have had aluminum blocks for some time now also.

All that aside, why are you trying to debate me about GM engines in a Dodge forum anyway? It's not a competition of "mine is better than yours" here. You got the engine in your Sierra that you wanted and I got the one that I wanted. Mine just happens to be bigger than yours, but then again you're probably used to hearing that and that's why it bothers you so much ;)

Well isn't just a good tast of hypocrisy or what?

I guess you never botherd to read what Marc wrote; but yeah So what? We all know the aluminum blocks just don't hold up as well in a work truck like that of a iron block. Case in point. My 318 Dakota is a iron block with over 200 miles on it and it still is able to pull a boat over any type of hill. Now show me any Aluminum block in a truck with that many miles on them?

Now of course there was slant 6 aluminum blocks but and they gave out some hi prefromance numbers up to 270 HP. But they didn't last long because of there head gaskets.

Sorry you feel that way. My '95 CC 4x4 5.2 has 165K of (sorry guys) spotty maintenance and neglect. Probably a lot needs to be done and will (Lord willing)when I get the finances back on track. I've no real desire for a newer truck; just want to clean up the ol'DAK and put another 165K, if possible and relatively economical. The price of new trucks has driven me off the lot for years to come. Probably will keep my Neon for the same basic reasons. Would like to either rebuild the 318 or swap in a 360.......love the website, will join soon. All those thumbnails wisper to my old eyes.......

I'm sorry to see that guy got such a lemon. I'd get rid of it too if it gave me that much greif.

As for my Dak it's been pretty much trouble free.
(2002 QC 4x4 4.7 auto 3.92 loaded with about everything.)

Other than routine maintenance, the only things I've replaced so far are:

-Front brake pads and rotors at 36k. Being a 4x4 4 door I think thats resonable.

-Ball joints at 37k. No cost to me, so no big deal.

-Gas cap ($13.00). Damn mil light came on.

Oh and I did put new tires on it at 36k. The original ones that were on it were about 1/2 worn, nice and even, but with the harsh winters here in NW PA I decided to put new ones on it.
That's it...

Keep in mind you can buy anything and have a lemon. I remember when I bought a brand new Honda CRX back in '87 because back then Honda just got such glowing reviews in all the press, just like now.

To make a long story short I unloaded that little POS after only 12k. It left me stranded twice, fouled spark plugs monthly and lost a motor mount bolt going down the highway on a long trip. Sometimes too it bucked and surged on hills at random, but never did it for the dealer.

This is why I think if you find a vehicle that's been working good for you, keep it. Everytime you trade its a roll of the dice.

What!!! who said that size matters??? My Modified 4.7L "with Superchip" in my dakota puts out more toruqe than your larger H.O 5.3 Vortech! And at 15 HP less.

But I didn't get a the smallest V8 becuase of a money issue.. I got it because I wanted better fuel economy like 21 MPG on the hwy. Does your get that??? I think not.

If I wanted to, I could have opt for a Avalance with a big 496 cid V8. But since I only pull a 2.5 ton boat I would only be wasting gas.

For all you 4.7 people out there that are bashing alum. engines you people should learn a few things.1st alum block and alum heads are better for sealing than cast iron block and alum. heads because the 2 metals expand at diff rates.2nd the 5.3 H.O. uses steel liners, steel is tougher than cast iorn witch is what us Dak people Cyl are made of. The 5.3 uses a 6 BOLT MAIN CAP and also is a pushrod engine witch is also more compact, overhead cam design dosen't realy help till higher RPM,s past 5500. Lastly look at the head design of the GenIII and GenIV Small Block Chevy's they have huge intake and exhaust ports. Oh yeah when have 2 differnt metals joined and have a fluid with some metal in it flowing there is this thing called electrolisis that can eat heater cores sound familar to some of us 4.7 guys.I own a Dak I love my truck for what it is little truck some what BIG ENGINE but I willnot sit here and tell I think DC makes the best powertrains I believe GM dose. But the reason I own a DC product is because GM has no balls to take chances and DC dose have the balls. You all should stop being so brand loyal and realize they all make good products and some times you get lemons.

Finally someone that actually knows something! The 5.3 HO seems to be a tough engine to get specs on, but I finally found exactly the info that you (upset boetie) mentioned. In addition, the all aluminum 5.3 is based off of the LS2 small block (yes the same that's in the vette). It's just a detuned version of the same short block. In addition, the piston slap issues was corrected by the '03 model year, but then again was that really a "problem"? My old Toyota 4-Runner had MAJOR piston slap since it was new and that truck had 280K miles (and still going strong!)when I sold it!

I also found out that GM is planning on converting most all of their iron blocks in to aluminum blocks. GM is in the process of taking over all aluminum block castings themselves instead of farming them out to a 3rd party. The reason the 5.3 HO is only available in a limited style of GM truck is because right now they can't produce enough aluminum blocks to cover all applications. In testing these engines (in GM test mules) have well over 400K miles on them with out major failures. Mind you I'm sure that's not real world miles, but I've had good luck with the small blocks in the past so I'm cofindent that I can get 200K miles out of my 5.3 HO. The 4.7L Dodge engine has been around since '99. I don't know of a single one that has made it past 140K miles. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

As for push rods....after owning a 4.7, I'm not a fan of OHC engines for a truck. Push rod engines are more durable over the long term and are cheaper and quicker to repair. Dodge must agree now, just look at the "Hemi". I also hear that the 4.7 may be discontinued in the future in favor of a detuned "Hemi" based engine. Why do you think that is? At 83K miles I think I got rid of my Dakota just in time. I've NEVER gotten rid of a truck that new! I may have bought a lemon Dakota, and despite that I did really like it, but I really didn't feel like taking another expensive chance with a Dodge even though the Ram with the Hemi is rated very well in reliablitly.

Sure I can just imagine putting a L6 405 Hp Corvette engine in your chevy 2500HD truck. Now if you idiots really think that would work while pulling 5 tons down the road then go ahead and let that be you next engine. I'm sure it might be fun at first but when those aluminum heads will be be ing and bust open like popcoorn.

Sure, And a aluminum block would save rigth but they have don't hold up like a cast iron block does.

And has far as OHC not being more durable ?? Well when is the last time you herd of a OHC engine throwing a rod??
