Message: Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't R-134a (1,1,1,2 tetrafluoroethane) have the same ingredients as a simple can of compressed air that you use to blow off your computer, because if so i could get that stuff alot cheaper than a can of R-134a, anybody?

Message: Some of those sprays do contain R134a, but I think you'll find a 12-oz can of R134a is only about $7, whereas the air is probably $5. So why not use the right stuff?

Message: R-134A is very different than the compressed air you get in a can. The properties of a regrigerant (R134A for examnple) make it able to be compressed and then to dissipate its heat. And then to require a large amount of heat to expand (hence the refrigeration cycle). Air will do this to an extent but nowhere near as effeciently (actually only a tiny amount).

Message: Hi Adam, yes i have to recharge my a/c and i too do not know how to go about it, i was on a web site last night that was comparing R-134a to compressed canned air and pointed out that the ingredients were exactly the same but only the top end was different, the R-134a can had a female end wich the connecting hose plugs into and the compressed air can had a male end wich takes a trigger spray end nozzle, but if modified it could be used, my problem is that i discharged my system but i don't want to pay to have it vaccumed out, and i am worried that if i just add a can of R-134a the ac will either not work or screw up something up.

Message: It MUST be vacuumed out, or it will not cool nearly as well, and will suffer an early death, which is very expensive.
The compressed air in a can CONTAINS some R134a, but it's a small part of its content. As I said, R134a is cheap, why wouldn't you buy the right stuff? And why try to rig it to put the wrong stuff in?
Why was your system emptied to begin with? You need to verify that there are no leaks before refilling.

Message: do not even think of using canned air to recharge the A/C. there is no oil in it and without replacing the oil that leaks out with the 134a your gonna tie up the A/C compressor.
you guys continually entertain me with your discussions of stupid ideas.

Message: How long was the system open.? I bled mine off to install cam, lifters, timing chain, valve springs etc. It was open for a couple of days, I recharged with the proper amount of 134 without evacuating the system. It has been three years, the air is cold and there are no problems.

You cannot recharge with the 'proper' amount if there is air (and MOISTURE!) in the system.

Message: Sure u can bob, u feed refrigerant in the high side without it running till it comes out the low side. then shut the high side valve on your gauges, start the a/c and fill it till you have about a 35# back pressure. It works, but a good deep vacuum is always best.

Message: That's a cheesy way to fill a system, and it still doesn't remove moisture, which is lethal to A/C systems. It also allows for excessive venting of R134a while filling.
Why are you so resistant to just doing what the factory recommends to service these systems?

Message: Cool Beans Dan. good luck.
It is a cheesy way Bob, but the point is, it can be done and successfully. I'm not resistant, I do refrigeration the legal, safe way. I'm just stating that it can be done without vacuum. Especially on auto system.
PS, I don't believe anyone has been fined 10 grand for illegal venting although thats the stated fine.
also, if 134a is sooooo leathal, why can any joe blow buy it. You need at EPA cert. card for 22, 12 and other refrigerants. You also need a MACS card for small cans of 12. Amazing. More government red tape.
Again , Good luck Dan.

Message: Well, it's a $25,000 fine, not $10,000, and your way is not legal.
No one said that R134a is lethal. But it is illegal to vent. It's easy to encourage someone else to take the risk when your neck is not on the line.

Bob you seem a bit anal retentive, you get worked up about A/C systems, cat converters among others.
Before you reply, I know you are trying to save us sapps from ourselves. I thought that was the government's job.

Message: Nope, I'm just letting you know what the law is so when you crybabies get caught, you've got no reason to complain. If you don't like the laws, change them. But understand the risk when you break them. You can't have it both ways. Take responsibility for your actions. I don't have any use for pussies who get caught and then complain that they didn't know, or it's not fair.
