Subject: Favorite Soft Tonneau?
IP: Logged

Message:
Got a job thats gonna be a 45 min mini-commute on the freeway, so I'm looking into inexpensive soft tonneaus for a little extra mpg and just a new look for my dak.

Any favorites? Any to stay away from?
I want a soft cover because I am assuming they are easier to remove & store when the bed is needed for larger stuff. (and I don't need any more painted surfaces to take care of)

Any advice will be great - Thanks!

Also, since I live in a desert, it needs to withstand 110+ temps in the summer with direct sunlight, and theres virtually no rain year-round so i dont care about being watertight.

Thanks!

I have an xtang I got in 1998. It has some small cracks and stuff near the corners on the back by the tail gait, that's from me rolling it up so much. Otherwise no problems. The only issue I have is that when it gets cool or wet, it shrinks so it's hard to put back on when i take it off.

Paid $209 with installation.

Not sure of the model that I have, but it does not have snaps.

I have the extang tuff tanneau. Love it and no problems except bending a bow when I fell down on it being careless. It has the "j channel" to keep it in place - no snaps. In the cold it can be quite difficult to close. I use a pair of pliers wrapped in a rag to give me some pull. Rest of year, closes real easy and keeps all things dry.

I had the Downey SST, was very great but wanted to upgrade to a hardshell. It worked great when I lived in central Florida and also great in the northern Indiana winters. I had one track break on it after 3 years, called Downey and they sent me a replacement for free(two years after warranty expired!!!).

I've been using the LeBra snapless one for years, first on my 98 Dak and now on my 05. Costs around $150 and works great. It's snapless, so its much easier to use during the below freezing Wisconsin winters.

If you want an easy to use and decent looking cover go with the Access roll up cover. I've had my for 3 years with relativily no problems. It can get a slight wet on the front during a downpour, but other wise its great, plus you can roll it up instead of removing it for large items. I like my dakota to look street, but also be useful.
Go to http://www.realtruck.com/products/accstan.php for more info. I got it for about $380.

I have an Extang soft tonneau with the J channel snapless
thing. It is great. I haven't noticed any improvement in mpg, but
it keeps things in the bed dry in snow and rain, and is easy to
remove and replace when necessary.
I paid less than $200, including shipping, for one that fit my
Quad-cab from an on-line site that specializes in tonneau
covers. Nice deal, because I would have had to special order it
anyway from any of the local auto parts and truck specialty
shops around, and their prices started at over $200 plus
shipping plus tax.
rich. The plier thing may work away from home, but when I'm at
home and need to get the last few inches of the cover locked
down, I use my wife's blow dryer set on cool. A couple of
minutes and the cover goes on easily.

I'll second Maggadog on the Extang I just bought a barely used Tuff Tonneau III and I love it had it on barely a week and after a round trip to Canada, 600 + miles roundtrip, I did see a 1/2 mpg increase on the highway.

Without question, go with the Access cover. I have had it on the quad cab for 2 years, looks brand new. I roll it up when I haul stuff and when it is closed it is tight as a drum. Seriously, you could bounce a basketball off this thing. Best single purchase I ever made for the truck.
