Subject: "Bump" at stop lights IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 Dakota QuadCab with the 4.7L engine and AWD. It has less than 2000 miles on it.
Occassionally when I pull up at a stop light, after I sit for 2 or 3 seconds, I feel a little "bump" from the back end.
It is similar to when an old automatic transmission clunks into neutral, but not nearly that severe. The first time it happened, I thought the person behind me had tapped my bumper.
It doesn't happen all the time. It happens in AWD, I have not noticed it in 4WD, but I haven't used 4WD much.
I've never had a AWD vehicle before, so is this normal? Does it have something to do with the AWD?
Thanks.

Message: I don't know what that is, I can tell you that its not related to the AWD. My 98 4x4 does that once in awhile too. I don't know what it is. If you find the answer can you please let me know? I don't recall hearing it while the vehicle is in 4wheel drive.

Message: So does anyone have any input on this anomoly? It doesn't happen every time you stop the vehicle, just once in a while. It happens 1 or 2 seconds after you bring the truck to a complete stop.

Message: I could be way off base but I have had trucks where the gas in the tank moves back and forth if you have just the right amount of gas in your tank and stop with just the right force, the gas really moves around in there ,it gives you the feeling someone nudged you ,then the baffles stop the movement so you only get one good bump. They are big tanks and its a lot of weight.

Message: Thanks, Russ, I will listen to it with that in mind.
It did not happen for a few days, but it was doing it again on Friday.
One thing I did notice is that on both of the only two days it has done this, the streets were extremely sloppy and slippery. So I'm back to wondering about the AWD.

Message: I've heard others say that the bump is the gas in the tank. I have a 4x4 and it tends to do it between 3/4 and 1/2 tank on mine. After that it goes away So I figured gas

Message: Jim and Russ
It looks like you were right about the gas sloshing around causing the bump sensation I notice at stop lights.
I have noticed that everytime there is a really pronounced bump, the gas gauge is exactly midway between 3/4 and full.
Thanks!

Message: Had a 97 4x4 3.9 with 5 speed and now have a 01 4x4 with 4.7 and auto. Both go bump - I think it is the fuel in the tank when it is around 3/4 tank. Causes no problem but gives strange sensation.

Message: It happens because you stopped just hard enough to partialy engage your anti lock brakes. The bump you feel is the brake system returning to normal mode from anti lock mode.

Message: I had to drop the 36 gal gas tank on my daughter's Durango to replace the tank gas level sending unit at 50K mi for $126. The tank is 48 in long and tapered from front to rear, 17 in wide and 12 in high at the rear, and 12 in wide and 6 in high in front. There are NO internal baffles to slow down the velocity of fuel movement during stops. The fuel sloshing back and forth in that long tank must have contributed to the excessive wear on the plastic pivots of the sending unit. Great engineering.

Message: I noticed something like that on my '01 QC. Just an odd little bump that I felt every once in a while. It wasn't really a shift, like fuel. But an actual bump, like something loose back there. I lowered the spare, and then raised it back up. Havn't felt it since. It didn't feel loose, or look out of place, but it doesn't do it any more. Go figure.

Message: 030400 - INTERMITTENT BUMP FELT AFTER VEHICLE HAS COME TO A FULL STOP
Date: 06/23/00 (supercedes 030799 dated 10/29/99)
Model year(s): 1999-2000
Description: A condition may exist where the vehicles owner may feel an intermittent bump (stop-bump) once the vehicle is brought to a full stop. The repair technician may erroneously diagnose this condition as a delayed transmission down shift into first gear. This condition may occur 3 to 20 seconds following the stop or when the load on the rear driveline is reduced (e.g., when the applied brake pressure is decreased). The stop-bump condition may be the result of a binding between the splined surfaces of the rear propeller shaft slip yoke and the rear output shaft of either the transfer case or the transmission. As load on the driveline is reduced, the bound slip yoke will release suddenly causing a bump-like sensation. The condition may be intermittent. If the above condition has been experienced, then perform the Repair Procedure. The splined surfaces on the slip yoke section of the new propeller shaft are nickel coated to reduce the opportunity of binding.
Details: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE SEPTEMBER 20,1999. A WJ EQUIPPED WITH A 4.0L ENGINE, A NV242 TRANSFER CASE, AND A 198 RBI (M35) REAR AXLE USES A DIFFERENT STYLE REAR PROPELLER SHAFT THAN THOSE WHICH ARE ADDRESSED IN THIS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. FOR THIS VEHICLE, THE SPLINED SURFACES ON THE PROPELLER SHAFT SLIP YOKE AND THE TRANSFER CASE OUTPUT SHAFT ARE GREASED TO PREVENT A BINDING CONDITION AND DO NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.
