Message: I guess this isn't Dakota specific but I don't want to hurt the paint on my yellow Sport :)
I have some grime on the paint on the undersides where the tires are. When I tried wiping it, it seemed like I was just moving abrasive gunk around and that it would scratch the paint. But maybe I'm worrying too much. Is there something I should apply to it first, or just let a detailing place do it?
Also I almost drove through a Chevron automatic car wash today, then noticed it said "Hot Soapy Wash!" Why in the world would I want to put hot water on my truck?!? Wouldn't that be really bad on the paint??
The paint on the very top of the bed is starting to fade already (it's a '99) so I'm trying to be careful. I think that may have been caused by the previous owner having a lid on it though....

Message: hot water hurting your paint? umm, have you ever noticed how warm the SUN is? hot water is nothing compared to it sitting outside on a summer afternoon. its not like the paint is gonna melt off or something in hot water, hell you probably shower in water hotter than what most car washes use.
you do know how to do that right? yeah, getting grime off of you is the same procedure for a truck. rinse, soap, rinse again, dry, move on.

Charcoal Lighter Fluid is one of the best products to use to
remove road tar, roadgrime and adheasives left behind by old
decals.
Thats right ..... CHARCOAL LIGHTER FLUID !
It WILL NOT harm the paint at all.
Always use a good quality car wash soap. Do not use household
dish soap !
Hot water will not hurt your paint.

Message: try tossing it in the gentle cycle, cold water only. you know, just like you wash your panties and nylons every week. careful not to mix your little yellow sport with your panties though, else the colors might mixed and your boyfriend will think you have pee-pee panties...

Message: Well I sure would like to know what's causing the paint to fade then, since it's only a '99, only has 40,000 miles and has been inside and out of the sun most of the time.
The way I'm washing it was the absolute last factor I could think of. Of course I didn't think the paint was going to melt off, but I thought maybe hot water...if excessively hot...was aging the paint prematurely or something. I'm trying to prevent the fading from spreading. I guess I didn't make that clear, but I guess I sure won't ask anything here anymore :)

Message: It's not really what you asked, but how you asked it. there's a lot of people on this site that think they know everything, and many people who actually are extremely knowledgable on dakotas and vehicles in general. I'm just somebody that likes to read these posts in hopes of learning more about my truck and maybe getting ideas on how to upgrade it. You might think about asking some friends first, because it is very well known that the temp of water has absolutely no effect on the paint whatsoever. I have a 99 dak with 60K on it, that i boughty at 25K and the hood was already fading. But i wax it once a month or so hoping that will add some protection, and it's worked thusfar. if u don't know how to wax a vehicle just ask find a friend that does, that's what i did, and it's incredibly easy. other than getting an extremely expensive paint job, waxing your truck every once in awhile is the only thing i can think of, and just keeping it clean in general.

Message: O and ialmost forgot to mention, DO NOT go to a detailing shop and pay them to take grime off of your vehicle, that's an extreme waste of cash and you'll look more like a fool doing so. Instead of using the drive through car wash, go through the area where you actually have to clean it yourself a few quarters at a time the way things were ment to be, not by machine. a high pressure hose will take off that grime and will not hurt the paint at all. And yes, you are worrying about this way to much and putting way to much thought into it. Remember, you drive a truck, not a neon. So be a man and act like it.

Message: Excessive high-pressure washes will damage the clear coat. Although that will take years, I doubt that is your problem.
It may also depend on where you live, say, in a salt water area.

Message: read some of the old postes, other people have had paint problems as well on 97-2000 dakotas, it think a vehicle like solar yellow after being in the sun for 6 years would prolly fade quicker than a darker colored vehicle?
My truck looks like it was in a knife fight, and lost! http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1275365

Message: JimP, WD40 does wonders with road tar and grime.
Spray it on area, wipe off with rag, toss rag in
the trash.
Using WD40 or any other tar removing product WILL
also remove wax so rewax that area at least.
As far as fading paint goes, try a light duty
cleaner wax first. If that doesn't bring the
shine back, use a light duty rubbing compound.
Good luck...

Message: There is also a product called color back you can get at wal-mart that works great for getting oxidation/grime out of paint and restoring the original shine, when you use it youll be amazed what kind of colour its able to bring out. My 93 Stealth looks like new, only downside is you have to apply and buff out by hand, a power buffer doesnt work well as you need to work it into the paint but its a great workout and the paint will look 10 times better!
