As for those compressor powered (venturi) vac's. I had a boss at a shop with one of those. i never thought much of them compaired to using an actual vacuum pump.
I think Dan confused us at first when he said "needing his system evac'd". I think now what he means is his system already has the NEW parts installed, and just needs it vacuumed down, NOT evacuated. Difference :p
Well. I KNOW I took pictures when I've fixed a few A/C's on family members cars. But can't find them now.
In the background is a vacuum pump.
I have an adapter I made so it can be threaded onto my automotive R134a gauges I have.
This is the micron gauge I use. AFTER you vacuum down until your gauges read about 29 or so inches you THEN turn on your micron gauge. It reads actual microns in the system, air milecules mostly. Anything that's in the system.
If you get it to pull down and HOLD 500 microns, you have done GOOD. Just using the gauges to see it pull 29 inches doesn't really show weather you pulled a good or long enough vacuum. It just shows a vacuum. NOT the air/moisture, etc molecules left in a system like a micron gauge does. You can get 29 inches in 5 minutes. But need to run it another 45 minutes to get to 500 microns!
I took a few pix real quick.
There's my recovery machine and one of my tanks. This is my personal stash. It sits in my garage, brand new. I have company supplied recovery and tanks for out at work.
There's my automotive 134a gauges. I broke the high side handle but they work fine.
There's my home made adapter. That's so I can connect my auto 134 gauges to my nitrogen tank, recovery machine, vacuum pump, etc.
I'll be fixing my hill billy friends Astro van here soon. He spent $800 at car shops who after replacing several items, have not fixed his leak. He gave up last summer and now it's HOT here again. If I work on it, I'll get some pix of the hook ups. He's got DUAL evaps in his van. But since it's his work van, we may remove his rear evap coil if IT is what is bad.

hi i live in sydney australia im a a/c mechanic i do airconditioning for a living here in sydney we charge $80 plus gst to evac and regas that price does not include any repair work ie leaks if you have a good two stage vacumm pump capable of pulling a vacumm of 27 to 29.5in hg close the valves let stand for 10 min if the gauges remain static recharge systym and by the way vac down for about 20 min a god vac pump will pull down to 29.5 al the best roger
