My 97 dakota sport ext cab 4x4 5.2 liter is getting horrible MPG, I am getting on average about 8-10 mpg. I am new to dodge and i never could have imagined that the mileage could be this bad. I have a new engine, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor. I dont even get on the throttle for worries that it will get even worse mileage. I also just had it smogged and it passed very well, so the cat and o2 can't be too off. and if you know CA smog laws you know it has to be working to pass. I have no aftermarket addons and I am asking for your advise on what could be the problem and what to do. Thank you

How new is the engine? Has it been broken in yet? Does it have any aftermarket upgrade parts?

Fuel leak? Are you noticing any gas smell when you drive it?
Engine light come on at all?

Probably best to have a dealer check it out like Super-bee mentioned, could be injectors or something.

Now Super-bee, don't dog my RC. The "Behemoth" routinely snags 15mpg with a 2V 318 LA. My Shelby only managed 16mpg at best with the same driving style. So much for progress. Now, the RC got 8-10mpg before I put a new timing chain/gear set in, along with a much needed tune up. How 'bout a timing set and an air filter since it looks like everything else has been done?

Check for a blown belly pan gasket. Can you see oil when you look down the TB ?

Thats what I thought my truck was getting (about 12 or even 11) untill I replaced my sending unit.. AS it turns out I had a hole in the float. So the mileage was way off.. Check out your sending unit. You might have to buy one at your local parts store..

I had a 96 318 4v4 cc dakota and after I replaced the unit I got about 16.5 avg.
