Subject: Coolant from exhaust manifold stud
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 3.9 Dak with the broken stud in the exhasut manifold casuing a leak. I removed the middle stud on the passager side and some coolant came out. Is this big trouble? I was told by the local motor shop that the stud actually goes into a water jacket. Is this bull? Anybody else see this.

Thanks,
Bruce

Seen it on slant sixes. It is common for a stud to go into a water jacket. Good luck fixing the leak, it's not fun.

So just putting in a new stud will not be good enough?

no it won't. a stud thread is designed to hold under tension but not to stop the flow of liquids like a taper pipe thread does. you may be able to stop it using plumbers putty or a teflon pipe thread sealer ( use the putty type not the tape )do not try to use a product like "thread locker" as it is designed to keep the threads from backing out under vibration or from idiots removing things that they should not. it is not designed to stop liquid flow.

one more thing trying to weld it closed will result in warping the head , then ya gotta get it machined, then ya gotta,,,, you get the idea.

Well, now, wait a minute. I didn't say it would continue to leak. If he just unscrewed it and it started gushing, putting a new one back with some threadlocker will do the trick, as long as the threads are still good. I was changing the manifolds on the slant six when I unscrewed a stud instead of the nut coming off. I put the stud back in and it never leaked again.

Now if it corroded and caused a leak, see the above.

I'm replacing all three studs so on the middle one I'm going to put some teflon thread sealer on the new stud and keep my fingers crossed.

During dyno testing, with an engine under load and with only 1/2'' air gap clearance, exhaust manifold temperatures reached 1000F

Better not use teflon...use something that will take the high temperatures.

Ok, got some high temp sealer and everything looks good. I got the exhaust manifold red hot then let it sit a few hours and took the manifold off to get a look and no leakage. I'm going for another now but I think everything should be fine. Thanks everybody for all your help.

I have worked in and owned machine shops for the better part of 45 years so I really do know of what I am saying "THREAD LOCKER IS NOT DESIGNED TO STEM THE FLOW OF ANY TYPE OR KIND OF LIQUID, USE A TEFLON PASTE PIPE SEALER OR PLUMBERS PUTTY" thread locker , ALL kinds of it start to loosen up by 180 degrees and will be completely soft and therefore will not stop the flow of liquid at 450 degrees.considering the bolt is in the exhaust manifold it most likely gets hotter then that under full load. see http://www.permatex.com
