I found this really cool '98 Dakota at a buy here - pay here lot. Its the only way I can get a dakota because my credit isnt good enough yet. The payments are close to 400.00 a month, thats alot for me but I really want this Dakota - What should I do?

That's a lot of coin to be paying on a seven year old truck - are you going to have anything in reserve for when it breaks down ? You mention the payments, but not the price. Basing buying decisions on payments instead of price isn't really good financial planning - not trying to slam you, just trying to give you a tip. Maybe you should get by with a beater while you turn your credit around ?

Those places tend to rip you off more than a dealer does.

look at some of the classified sites online like autotrader or cars.com. You may find a better truck at a cheaper price.

$400/month is new(er) truck pricing. Granted you said you don't have excellent credit.

wannabe, just a little advice, go find a used Dakota at a well known dealer, we have several lenders who loan to those with even the worst known credit history. The interest rates are a little, sometimes alot higher but the payments and service are alot better than those buy here places. Doesnt cost anything to try it first..
Good luck..

Be very aware w/ buy here pay here tipe of business. I`ve seeing vehicles being repossessed after a few days w/out timely payment, w/ the vehicle almost paid off.
Most lots buy here, pay here, will charge in a weekly basis, wich may work against you.
Wanna be, make sure you can be where you want before you get there. Good luck.

Those lots are also known to be the resting place of "problem" vehicles that the bigger used car dealers didnt want anything to do with. If you can get by for a couple of months save that $400 payment you would have made and look for a private party deal. You would be suprised what you can get for 2,000-2,500 (In the last year I have bought a 1992 Dodge Stealth-$2,000, 1998 Ford Focus (stationed in Europe-$2,500) and a 1993 Dodge Caravan with a new Tranny-$1,500. All were private party deals (Sold the Focus to pay cash for the van and put some coin back in my pocket). I have been where your at and when your hanging on w/o any credit that monthly payment more often than not will come back to bite you and leave you with nothing to show for it.

Yeah, def just save your money, you can get a 98 base dakota from a private seller for cheap.

Thats how i got my first dakota, it was a base truck, and i just added extior mods as i went, wheels, tires, grille, chrome bumpers etc....

plus you could always try to get a loan for a smaller amount, once you have money saved.

Thx for all the input - sounds like I need to get the willpower to wait. And the patience to look for an alternative way of buying a dakota. Its everything I've got not to get this truck. Down right agony.

is your credit bad because you just don't have much of a credit rating or did you skip out on payments and have a repo or two? if the latter rather then the former mayhaps your "rents will cosign for ya. I did for my kids as my ol man done for me many a year ago, my youngest bought a spankin new intrepid for no down and 0% financing 3 years ago and has made all the payments so far and his trw is quite hi now.

If you dont have credit because a lack of credit then if you have to have ur vehicle then go to a credit union. Normally they have better rates. First truck (financed through dealer) 29.5%....Second one (my dak financed through C.U.) 17.5% and I only paid on my first for 9 mos. I also almost paid it off but still. I wasn't lucky enough for someone to cosign for me.
Would've been a lot nicer. Trust me I know how hard it is not to get ur truck cuz, I have/had the same prob.

I dont have bad credit or a cosigner - I'm on my own if I want a Dakota and I have a decent job that I just started 2 months ago. I just happened to see this truck in a buy here pay here lot and I am way tempted to get it. SOOOOO close!

Yea I was serious about my interest being 29.5%. The truck was only $4000. Seiously if you have to have the truck try going through a credit union first. Get a loan and then work out the price with the dealer. Just a thought.
