Message: How can you tell if your carrier bearing starts to go bad? I have a new vibration and a bit of a grinding noise. Would a bad carrier bearing play havoc with the transmission mount or vise verse?

Message: I wouldn't think that would damage the trans or trans mount. If it's loose enough you'll get some vibration and extra noise.
Reach under there and grab the drive shaft. Try turning it back and forth with the trans in park and the parking brake set. Keep an eye on that round flange where the drive shaft is bolted up the differential. If you can see it move, the bearings are going south. Gear lash is measured in thousands of an inch. My eyes are not good enough to visualize .003 inches of movement; I suspect yours aren't, either.
