...on a stock 318 exhaust.

What are your guys' thoughts on this?

This past weekend my friend and I cut off the tips on his 1999 Olds Aurora. We were obviously bored, but to our surprise that 4.0L V6 sounded like a loud small block V8! It's really funny because it's a granny mobile but sounds like it's packin' under the hood.

This makes me wonder how a 5.2L V8 would sound with the tip cut off. I'm considering it until I spring for Flows. Advice?

The cat is between the muffler and the engine.
Think about it.

A 4.0 Aurora is a V-8, that is your explanation. Look under the hood you will see eight cylinders.

Just found out today that the Aurora is V8. Sorry for the misinformation.

>---[ ]----<=>---E

There's a little diagram.

> = tip
[ ] = catback
<=> = catalytic converter
E = headers

I would just cut the tip off to the catback.

If this actually had an advantage, don't you think automobile manufacturers everywhere would do this to save on the parts?

Yeah it sounds louder, you don't have any plumbing or a muffler after your cat. A "tip" to me means just the short pipe coming out of the muffler.

Danger Will Robinson, I see problems ahead. Loss of back pressure among other things.

Why don't you just cut the tip off up to the muffler? Will sound beefy and loud but you won't lose much back pressure.

You know, I was just thinking, if you take the exhaust manifolds off too, it will get really loud and raspy.

Hardy har har. :|

I've decided that if I do any cutting it will be up to the muffler. I won't get rid of it.

So... what I was wondering. is what ever made you guys DECIDE to go experiemnt with the Olds like that anyway?

Was your friend ready to replace the pipe if he DIDN'T like it?

I tell you what. Anytime you cut pipe off taht far under the car like that, it gets LOUD as sh1t in the cab and you will feel the vibrations in your feet! Might be cool for a while but He'll get tired of it after a while. I've done it and it gets in your head.
You COULD just STRAIGHT pipe it. Removed the mufflers but retained the tail pipes. (Put pipe where the mufflers where) THEN it would be loud as sh1t still especially to OTHER people around you, but NOT under the cab.

About a year ago, I had the third cat cut out of my 4.7, manual, QC, 01. Put an aluminized ;;ipe in it's place, all welded up with the original cat hanger, for like $30US.

It's louder, has a little rumble, but still quiet enough to enjoy the melodies...like the Offspring

That third cat is very restrictive also, including a fine mesh screen accross the entire pipe at one end.

Soon, Im having a custom dual set up from the precats back, taking out the restricitve Y pipe, etc.

I'm just gonna cut off the tip up to the muffler and see if I like it. If not, I'll throw some $30 glasspacks on there until I get a new exhaust system.

Just remember if your exhaust ends under the cab, you have a good chance to kill yourself with exhaust gas. Leave it the way it is until you can get a real setup.
