Subject: 44RE tranny won't coast at freeway speed IP: Logged
Message: Hey folks, hope you'll help out someone with a different Chrysler product. I have a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L V8 with the 44RE tranny, 117k miles.
Normally, when I let off the gas at freeway speeds, the Jeep coasts well. Lately, when I let off the gas there is a short pause and then the vehicle starts slowing pretty quickly. There's no jerk and *maybe* the feel of a shift down. I'm guessing the torque converter is locking up??
I had the fluid flushed out by one of those Jiffy lube machines using my own Castrol ATF+3 (not the Dextron w/modifier) and I replaced the tranny relay under the hood with no change. I bought a TPS and will install that today. I'm hoping someone has some experience with this. Solinoid pack replacement maybe?
Thanks for any ideas or experiences with this.

Message: its possible that you could have a brake hanging up a little. thats something i would consider.

Message: Thanks for your ideas. It's definitely not the brakes. I changed the TPS out last night and disco'd the battery long enough to reset the computer. This morning, I had an hour long freeway drive. The problem started out really bad...for maybe fifteen minutes, then it drove great for the rest of the trip. Return trip to the office was excellent too. The problem started again on the trip home this evening.
I put this issue on a Jeep forum. A few people said they had similar problems, but no had ever found a solution.

Message: Joe. C., yeah, it is definitely the torque converter locking up, but what would cause that to happen at that time? Since this seems intermittent, I'm thinking it's an electrical problem; sensor, relay, solinoid.

Message: I think you got the same problem I did with the solinoid. But be sure to trouble shoot first
