Subject: Speed Sensor Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1993 Dakota 4x4 V8. It is having the common problem of the O.D. not enguaging. And the abs/brake lights are on. However, the speedometer seems to work fine and I am not geting any CEL's. I was wondering if there is a way to test the speed sensor to know if it is actually functioning or not? Does anyone know what the output of the sensor is? Perhaps a 0-5v output?

Believe this sensor is on the rear axle centrepiece...
Check the wiring to it , and connector..
If that is all ok , then just get another one
and replace it...

thought I would summarize the threads

diagnostic:

--check engine lite = tranny speed sensor
--abs + brake lite + speedo weird = diff abs sensor
--cruise surges = TPS sensor on trottle body

helpful hint - if you're replaceing the tranny speed sensor, park it with the rear uphill or the rear wheels raised - so your tranny fluid don't come out ( have autozone check trouble lite)

RE: ABS and BRAKE light on

just did rear abs sensor - problem solved, some hints for a 99 dak
- day before spray nut with wd40 or liquid wrench
- drive rear wheels up ramps (or steep driveway, helps keep diff fluid from leaking out, also chock wheels!)
- disconnect neg battery teminal
- top nut 13 MM use box wrench
- bottom nut 14 MM use box wrench
- press connect with thumb and pull connector off sensor
- wiggle sensor up, put screw driver under lip and wiggle to raise (carefully)
- dip finger in hole and put diff oil on new O ring on sensor
- push sensor in and bolt up (also, use dielectric grease for the wire connector)
- put ignition key in and turn to on position for 30 seconds
- reconnect battery
the reason you put the key to the on position is to clear the trouble lite and reset the PCM.

you're done

Note: Check the wrench sizes, I've seen that some people use 1/2" and 9/16" (which are close to 13mm and 14mm). Not sure if the nuts are metric or not.
