The Generation I Dakota's all have a cross between a typical "carborateur" and real fuel injection. Its sort of a cross between the two. You have fuel injection, with two fuel injectors, but it still looks and acts much like a carb. I guess the real fuel injection wasn't a part of Dodge's priorities back then, as my old 1986 Ford Bronco had true fuel injection, and my 1989 Dakota doesn't.

Anyways, I have a brand new (or should I say refurbished?) TBI system for my Dakota. Has all the injectors, sensors, and everything. Has been repolished up by Holley. I'm thinking about selling it.

So does TBI have a Carb type air filter, because that is what my 87 Dak has. So does a TBI limit performance or something? Are there any pro's to a TBI? What are the Con's?

It only has two injectors??? How does that work with six cylinders?

Thanks,

Donald

It inject's the fuel into the throttle body where it mixes with air and and is drawn into the cyliders much like a carb. A new V6 has six injectors that spray a mist into each cylinder directly.(direct injection) Don't know of any really pro's except of TBI other than it's more eficient than a carb. However direct injection in the new vehicles is even more eficient than TBI.

Jeffster is right. Two injectors that spit fuel into the system, much like a typical carb, and then is delivered into the pistions. Pros and cons? I dont know. One huge con is they are very hard to replace (the entire TBI unit) as I doubt Holley has any laying around their warehouse. Mopar would requre a second mortgage on your house, too.

A pro would be only having two injectors in case you needed to replace them. I usually get my two injectors "serviced", or cleaned out in other words, and every 18 months. Helps them stay clean and good performance. Some auto shops have a machine that services the injectors. Takes about 30 minutes and costs around $90.

Thanks for the replies. So they perform better than a normal Carb? I thought my Dak has an old fashioned Carb, but i guess i was wrong. It sure looked like a carb. It fooled me. Of course it doesn't take much to fool me :)
