Subject: Rear End Noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab, 3.9 Liter, manual transmission. About two weeks ago, i've noticed that i have had some rear end noise every time i switch from first to third gears. Once i hit 3500 rpms, it goes away. Anyone have any suggestions on what's going on? I was told it could be a throwout bearing, but i have not problems with my clutch or anything. Another another thing someone told me that it could be my u-joint. I also took it to a garage. They couldn't figure out what was wrong. The mechanic said that he thinks my heat sheilds around my catalytic coverter may be loose. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Message: U-joints are speed sensitive not rpm sensitive. When
the cab vibrates like hell around 60 mph, you'll know
your u-joints are shot.
My 1st suggestion would be the throw out bearing, or
pilot bearing - forgot which, haven't ripped into a
clutch in years. YMMV

Message: Throw out baring makes noise when the cluch is pushed in > Front transmision baring makes noise with the cluch out > This includes nutral > Rear end gear noise should be there all the time when moving only unless it's your LS > Then most likely while doing a corner or spinning > Now the converter can make noise moving or not > Gets worse or better with engine speed moving or not > You need to do a process of elimanation here then ask again with what you learn > Good luck

Message: When the truck is idoling, it's fine, when it's in reverse it's fine...only when it's in first gear, second or third, it sounds as if something is loose or banging metal on metal...i can live with it by turning up the music, but i don't like driving my vehicle when i know something is wrong.

Message: Is there a smelly odor coming with that rear end noise? My dad has a lot of rear end noise, but he says it's only natural. So I wouldn't worry about it.

Message: No there's no smell or anything. I'm not just not going to worry about it...if it's something major i don't want my truck to break down in the middle of no where.

Message: The noise on my LS resulted in a replacement of the entire dif., after an unsuccessful atempt to fix it, as well as the NV 3500 transmission, at 75000 miles, (just before the end of the service contractor`s "extra warranty"),.
Some say bad luck but i say what a great luck.
