Subject: 5/18 NBC: Generic gas quality? IP: Logged
Message: During sign-off of the NBC Nightly News, mention was made of a report on Wed. 5/18 about "generic gasoline quality", and if it is the same as "name brand" gasoline. This is a debate that has gone on for years. Drivers, that I know, of oil company trucks have told me repeatedly, "Gasoline is gasoline": all from the same storage facility. Some company-specific additives are put in after the tanker is loaded. We shall see...

Message: I don't believe that anything is added after the tanker is closed. With only a few major refineries in the country, I believe gas is gas.

There are a few refineries that are putting in additional additives others are not (more than the EPA minimum) and it's referred to as "top tier gas".

Message: gas is gas, if you have trouble with truck pinging try another station. heard some reports that advise trying several stations and if necessary different brands (generic and name brands)something that has to do with contaminants in their storage tanks.

Message: There are only some many refiners of gas. The big difference is the amount of detergents they put in. The detergents are supposed to keep the engine components cleaner and therefor more fuel efficient.
While there are companies that sell "better" gas (top tier vs non top tier) there is no "bad" gas - as it's all approved for motor vehicle use. gas is gas just with differnet amounts of detergents - this is what makes it "better" - more detergents the cleaner it keeps your vehicle. The big issue that is not visible is the amount of crap in the gas tanks under the gas stations. That's why you have a fuel filter. Fill up on a day that filled the tanks and you get a bunch of crap floating around that will make its way to your tank.
