Does anybody know the appropriate amount of time to wait before waxing a freshly painted truck?? I recently got the hood and front fenders repainted(long story!) and was wondering if you wait a few months as I've heard or wax/polish it right away?? It is PPG paint w/ a clearcoat, any help would be great!

Good question, what does the guy that painted it say?
I did just find a good deal on a orbital 9" buffer/polisher at Sears with a few extras for $49..sure makes the waxing easier.

Eddie,
I just had my '89 Mustang painted in June and the body shop advised me to wait 5-6 weeks before the 1st wax job and then wax ever 3-4 months after that. They said it was ok to wash right away and as much as you like. Rascal, I picked up that same deal from Sears. You are right about it making the job much easier. Cuts the work/time in half and seems to do a nice job too.

Make sure you run cool clean water over your fresh paint job every day. Do not pressure wash. After about 4-6 weeks of this you can use wax on it. If you get anything like bird sh%t on it wash it off right away.

I work in a Detail Shop that does body work as well. We wax some vehicles the next day after they're painted. Make sure the wax you use isn't a paste wax though, try something like carnuba wax. I used it every time I washed my black 98 Ranger and I now have a black 2001 Dakota and use it every time I wash it as well.

I reccomend using a paint sealant every six months and use something soft like carnuba wax in between. Don't forget the bumpers and even the wheel wells -- I don't want someone to be sad when they buy my truck in a few years -- if you take care of them right, they look new for years.

Good luck.

just had the roof repainted on the Stang, the body guy said I could wax it that day if I wanted. He said they put the car in a heated booth to let the paint cure.

well, I haven't done it yet, but I am ordering Zaino... will wax soon =]

Also, I have been told 3 mos is a good wait time, and if you consider that it takes a month to get the vehicle to the lot, and you buy it a month or 2 later, then you should be ok.

I have heard several diff opinions though.

The Stang was built in jan and hasn't been waxed yet... still beads though

Ok, I've been in bodywork for 18 years. 4-6 weeks after the paint is appled is correct for waxing, The paint isn't fully "cured" until after that period. (The warmer & more humid the climate the longer the curing process takes) If you apply wax during this time you may get a dull haze trapped under the wax requiring a mechine polish & buff to remove it. As for the cold water, I don't know what benifit it has but it will help to keep the paint clean, but make sure to dry it thoroughly and carfully (to prevent water spots but DON'T SCRATCH OR MARK THE PAINT WITH THE TOWEL OR CHAMMIS, THE PAINT IS VERY SOFT AT THIS TIME WITH NO WAX PROTECTION). Don't rub hard during the 1st 4-6 weeks (until wax is appled) with a wash mit or chammis, pleanty of soap on the mit. After the 4-6 week wait use "polish" 1st then wax the vehicle. The polish will bring out a brilliant color & depth and the wax will presurve that look. (worth the xtra work)

Impureitys and petrolem distilates will surface until the paint fully cures. Most of these impureitys are not good for the clear coat. By washing them off it is less likely that they wil attack the clear coat. It also removes any contaimanents from the enviromet like dust, chemical from industry.... You do not want these things to attach them selfs to your new paint.
