Message: I have a 2004 Quad Cab with the 4.7L V8 and the 5 speed automatic. I have the 3.55 differential. The dodge web site indicates that I can tow 4750 pounds. If I had the 3.92 differential this would increase by 1300 pounds to 6050 pounds.
Any idea what drives this difference in rating?
Can the 3.92 handle more torque?
Thanks
- Andy

Message: They are saying that with the 3.55's, your transmission and engine will be working harder than with the 3.92's.
If you are going to tow more than 4750 pounds, just make sure you leave the overdrive turned off and don't drive like an idiot, especially on hills.

Message: Your engine still makes the same torque; so the 3.92s aren't actually handling more torque - they're putting it to the ground more effectively. Many of us tow with the overdrive on with the 4.7 with no problems, only seems to shift into higher gears in low load situatios (like downhill).
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Towing with a truck is like riding a bike uphill.
Would you rather be in 5th or 15th gear on your bike going up a steep hill?
Your truck would rather have 3.92's for the same reason. It's easier on the engine.
That said , on the highway your revs are also higher, with or without a load.
As suggested above, if you have 3.55's and you notice the truck lagging because of the trailer weight, switch off the OD and you'll see some improvement in percieved pulling power but a decrease in fuel economy.
Sorry for stating what seems obvious, but some people are newer to towing than others.
