Ok, don't laugh.. I traded in my 98 Ram in for a sirra.. I needed another truck that got better than just 13.5 MPG.There was know way that you could even seat me in that ugly new body dakota unless you thow in a winning lotery ticket in the back seat. .

Oh, I still got my 02 Dakota modle.. As a matter of fact my Ram use sitting up in the shed for a month because I almost forget I had it..

This Serria get 22 MPG on the HWy..

And for a base V8.. 4.8L (292cid) I find it very impressive.

Sierra.. I'm must be drunk.. As a matter of fact I'm still in a daze.. Always say no to beer penuts if you can..

About my Sierra.

Its not totally brand new.. Its a 04 Modle, regular cab, Z71 with about 6100 miles and also its got a tow package with 3.72:1 gears including a off-road package..

I really amazed about the low end grunt of this V8.. Yes I know its got more horsepower than what you will find in the Dodge's base engine 287 cid (230/295). But this engine is rated at 285 HP with the same torque rating as a base V8 for a new Dodge.. I guess GM makes there trucks lighter. Also its got a 3.06:1 cog so I guess thats a plus in power also.

My pervious trucks got about 14.2 Miles per gallon at best (RC,4x4,360) The truck (so far) is averaged about 18 MPG and over 20 MPG on the hwy..

Truth is I would have bought a Dodge Ram Big Horn edition. But since gas is still over 2.14 gallon over here and I don't really work my trucks all that much.. I think I made a better choice with a GMC Sierra.

HP ratings can be deceptive, especially in trucks. Torque is more important in a heavier vehicle like a truck than HP is. To me, in a truck you want your peak torque to be down lower for more towing and low and grunt.

Chevy 4.8 specs: 275 HP @ 5200 RPM / Torque- 290 ft-lb@4000 RPM
Dodge 4.7 specs: 235 HP @4800 RPM / Torque-295 ft-lbs@3200 RPM

Clearly the Dodge 4.7 makes less HP, but it’s peaking at a lower RPM. That and 4.7’s torque is slighter higher than the Chevy 4.8 and it’s making it at a substantially lower RPM than the 4.8. To me the Dodge 4.7 is a better truck motor due to it’s making more torque at a lower RPM than the 4.8. Of course gearing can change the “feel” of an engine dramatically. Perhaps your 4.7 had taller gears than the 4.8 making the 4.8 feel like it has more low end grunt.

Dodge could have easily cammed their 4.7 for more HP at a higher RPM for better looking numbers on paper, but it’s obvious they choose to make more low end grunt at lower RPM instead. In others words, by using a different cam profile the 4.7 could have been designed to make say (hypothetically) 295HP @ 5400 RPM. That would look great on paper, but the low end grunt would suffer as a result.

Be sure to check out this GM engine related site too: http://www.pistonslap.com/

Well according to the GMC website there rating for the 4800 is 285 HP not 275.

And about 300 lbs Toruqe..

Also, if you did had more HP (lests say 50 +) that should incease toruqe of the engine to about 350ftbls.

This site : http://www.speedscenewiring.com/LR4.html lists the 4.8 just as stated earlier, 275 HP @ 5200 RPM / Torque- 290 ft-lb@4000 RPM. Perhaps the slight difference from the GMC site is in the year of motor??? Also, this site lists the 4.7 specs: http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/Cammer/4_7_v8.html

So at the GMC site, if it lists the torque at 300lbs, what RPM is it making it at? Bet it’s still on the high side compared to the 4.7. Good to know that a small 50 HP increase in the 4.7 would bring it up to over 350lbs though. Interesting…

On that VW 4 banger 2.0 that makes 247 lb ft of torque at only 1900 RPM. That a must be the 134 HP diesel the you're talking about. Probably turbocharged right?? You’re comparing apples to oranges here. If it were gas powered and normally aspirated like the engines we’re talking about it’d probably make like 122 lb ft of torque like listed here: http://www.visi.com/~bhjelt/specs.htm

Makes me wonder what the 4.7 or 4.8 would put out if it were tubocharged...hmmm

Dude you don't say. This was an ever ending argument last year on this subject!

For a while I had a 1/2 ton Chevy truck (work truck) with the 4.8 Vortec in it.

I'll tell you it had NO balls form a dead stop or going up some hills at low RPM's like my 4.7 Dodge does.

however, that engine must be designed for power up in the RPM's or something.
Because at about 3000 RPM's the fukker started to really take off. Great engine for a Camero or the likes (if they would have used it in a car) but not really for towing a load.
I have NO problem blowing the new Chevy trucks away on the hills with my 4X4 4.7

Anyway. That was about a year ago since I had that truck. For the last 10 months I've been driving a 1 ton van again. Chevy Express with a 5.7. just this last week I got a new(er) van. It's got the 6.0 Vortec. Same thing as the 4.8
It feels kind of dead until about 30 MPH then it takes off like it's on steroids!

So, the 4.8 and 6.0 I have driven both were VERY peaky in the upper RPM's much like a Honda V-Tec or something. I'm sure it's tuning of the cam and intake runners.

The 4.7 is very flat in my Dak. I feel no peak to it at all really, even with the HO cams.

Eventually I DO plan on some mods which most likely will MOVE my power upwards more making it drive the same way. But by then I'll be running at least 4.10 gears and pray i can still tow as good as I do now.

WEll ture..

But check out the 5.7L Hemi.. Its got 345 HP and 375 ftlbs toruqe at what RPM?? 4400? So that nothing more than a car engine itself.. As a matter of fact the nissan Titan V8 has 5ftlbs more toruqe and with 40 less horsepower and at a lower peak rating.

Also the 5.4L 3v triton as a lower peak than does the Hemi.. And isn't but 10 ftlbs shy of the Hemi's mark.

Personaly I chose the Mopar 318 over the GM 4.8 or Mopar 4.7 when it comes to low end grunt..

The 318 having more GRUNT than a 4.7 is not really accurate me thinks.

Maybe the 5.9 vs. 4.7, but I can grunt my 4.7 with the same load better than some 318's I know.
I do some routine towing through the mountains with family who have 318's.

I can also keep MINE in OD more often. So what does THAT tell you?

ill put a high output cam of some sort in my 318 and get back to you. with your HO cams, ok. a 4.7 with regular cams... i dont think so. but thats just me.
correct me if im wrong, but a 4.7 with regular cams, has about the same torque rating, but at like 3600 rpm...

Yeah I think its does... At around 3500 revs..

I currently own a Dakota with a 4.7L V8 wit a superchip and its got more grunt than my older dakota with a MFI 318 could come close to putting out.. But again, that with the superchip installed.

Of corse I also got a 5 speed in my 02 also.

But my Sierra is still very impressive higher RPM.. I'm sure it would outrun my dakota with the chip out.

Jay, you will ALWAYS read about and hear about problems on forums, and typically even in everyday life. Unless somoene else is complaining about something, most people don't out of the blue say "hey, my truck is trouble free!"

Read things on this board carefully but also be smart enough to realize that probably 65% of it is said in anger, ignorance, or bliss. Anything said with an emotion attached to it is skewed from the get go. So, the hard part is determining what to believe. :)
